I don’t think Campbell wanted to deal with the guy, to be honest.
Vegas, Atlanta and Chicago passed on Carter too, even thought they could ALL use interior help. Philly is The Only team choosing in the top-10 that could afford the risk on him. That’s very telling.
I wonder if with the advent of paid players and the huge focus on career etc if football coaches at that level have totally abandoned their roles as mentors off the fieldi know when I was 18-21 I sure as heck got a lot of guidance from my bosses and professors.
I wasn’t wild about Anderson or Gibbs, so me and Brad definitely weren’t in sync this year.
You will be
I’m a really big Gibbs fan. Definitely a player I wanted but didn’t think we had the pick to get him. I thought he would be somewhere between 18 and 32. Gibbs was a pretty big reach imo. I think if you are taking a RB that high, he needs to be Alvin Kamara at least for it to make sense value wise. He’s got a shot and that would be awesome…but man that’s gonna be a tough with his size.
I wouldn’t change the 5 players we got on days 1 & 2. I really liked all 5 going in. I think Branch and Hooker were some of the biggest steals of the draft. While Gibbs and LaPorta felt like a couple of the biggest reaches. In the end, those 4 plus Captain Jack was a heck of a haul.
I wanted Carter and was disappointed we passed. It took me less than 24 hours to get over it though. I’ve never been so satisfied after a draft as I was this past year.
Anyone still wonder if there is a high speed Ruggs-style accident that ends his career??? ![]()

I pretty much agree with all of this, Carter was a guy we needed , but I like all of our picks and am fine with our draft. I think a lot on here are hyping Gibbs up because he wears a Lions jersey now. I think I’ll wait till he plays great before I say he’s great people talk like he’s Barry before he ever played a down.
Hooker is a good gamble but I don’t know about steal. He went about where he should have IMO, sure there was a chance he got reached for by a QB needy team.
Brian Branch was one of the bigger steals.
This was more of a reach than steal draft for the Lions.
I think this will just carry a theme of quality vs quality. Carter could be an amazing pro… let’s assume he is. But our draft was pretty excellent as well. I believe either scenario would have worked. That said, we have what we have and it is good.
If he works he’s THE biggest steal. But then again he may never even get the job.
His injury pushed him to the 3rd round. Without it, he definitely goes much higher.
I think that makes him a steal? But I understand under the circumstances why he wasn’t one.
You could call Will Levis a steal. Malik Willis was called a steal by some. Sam Howell was a steal IMO. A guy who is 25 with as many question marks as Hooker, I don’t really buy the steal narrative but I’m fine if people want to call him that.
You really aren’t a steal period until the dust settles and we so how you turned out.
He’s just a potential steal. We don’t know yet.
Well there is backseat driving steal and then there is draft day steal. On draft day, you have to consider all of the potential outcomes, not just the best case outcome.
I do like the Lions change in philosophy, trying to draft a starter when we already have a good one. Something we never did when 9 was here. Goff has to be feeling some pressure by now.
Is there such a thing a draft day steal? Why? Because they kipers and Mcshays say so?
I’m not accusing you of thinking this lol just saying I don’t think there are draft day steals. Some guys just have higher potential to be one than others. All that really matters is how a player turns out. Not what we thought was a steal at the time.
Yes, I believe in draft day steals. Just this year, I felt Brian Branch was a bit of a steal.
I still don’t think anyone else takes Campbell in the first round but us. I think we end up with a lesser version of Gibbs, but a guy who does mostly the same thing behind Montgomery which would have been fine, (or just have kept Swift). Branch could have been had w/o the TD. We just may not end up with BroMart, but BroMart vs Carter… uh… I’d have lived… We either get Campbell or LaPorta, not both and I would take that all day erry day to get Carter here.
The fact is IF Carter doesn’t turd out of the league, then we’ll likely regret the move. TBD.
There are absolutely draft day steals. You just don’t know for sure that’s what you have for awhile. It’s not Kiper. It’s a guy like St. Brown that the whole league passes on up top, then he goes and shows he’s one of the best up and coming WR’s in the NFL with a 2nd year PB to his name. It is easy to call St. Brown a draft steal, because that is exactly what he has proven to be. A player that far exceeds his draft position. You can’t crown Branch yet (thought he looks like one), but you certainly can crown Amon-Ra at this point.
