Jared Goff got closure from Sean McVay, and it helped make him a Detroit Lions hero

A lesser person would have never made it this far.

Great story, and even better that it was an LA Times piece.

My most endearing memory of Marinelli here in Detroit was his returning to the media room for a farewell presser. For all the heat he took (and deserved), that showed a level of character that’s hard to appreciate after an 0-16 season.

"Goff showed up at Whitworth’s house in the days after the deal was consummated to get his thoughts. Then the quarterback informed him he was moving on for an exit meeting with McVay.

“I’m like, Wait, what?’ ” Whitworth recalled. “And he’s like, I told Sean I still want to do our exit meeting…’ And I was like, You’re crazy. Why would you want to do an exit?’ And he said, I want him to tell me right to my face what I did wrong. I want to hear it from him. How do I get better?’ He wanted closure.”"

It may be short lived, and I am perfectly fine with not being the team everyone roots for, but I think there is no doubt that this is “America’s Team” this year.

  • It’s not about the size of the dog in the fight—It’s about the size of the fight in the dog. Go Goff !!

I’ve made a lot of jokes about the “I’d pipe her” comment/joke that Jared supposedly made about Veronika in an online team chat, but I really do believe that it both may have happened and might have been what really dampened their relationship. His play certainly didn’t help but the reason I think there was more to it than the play is that everyone swears by Sean as a leader. If you hear Whitworth talk about him as a leader and a human being it sounds like Andrew would die for the guy. Andrew is of course an NFL man of the year so he would know character.

And yet in terms of leadership characteristics, McVay handled the Goff divorce rather poorly. Making harsh public facing comments, refraining from the normal upbeat coach speak that you see directed at the vet on the way out. Why would he behave that way? Well, when you feel like someone disrespects you in a manner that was from your vantage out of bounds then perhaps your own ethics become a bit pliable.

And we won’t ever know if that “I’d pipe her” thing really happened. And if so, Goff was clearly just joking and trying to bond with the guys coming out of Covid. But I’ve always wondered why McVay’s behavior during the Goff divorce was so different than what is reported to be the norm.

Goff shoulda walked the line if that were the case… glad he grew up and it benefited all involved.

Happily ever after. Everybody!

The pipe her story has been sufficiently squashed over the years. It was linked to a twitter comment on a poster that was a known joker. That’s why you don’t see any legit source quoting it. It went viral a day after Goff was traded because people were looking for any reason why he was traded and that is a funny/memorable one. I don’t think it’s true at all.

The best evidence is:

  1. Goff has never shown to be unprofessional like that. It wouldn’t shock me if he made comments he thought were locker room safe as a young 25 year old, but it just doesn’t seem his style.
  2. There are many Rams players that McVay has turned on in a similar way including guys like Gurley, Akers, Ramsey, and Talib. There is a common pattern here that goes way beyond Goff. If McVay feels like you are holding back his success, you are dead to him. Girlfriend need not be involved.

As to everyone swearing by Sean as a leader, That has been turning strongly over the last few years. Partly because of Goff having success without him. Partly because the Rams have not been winning. If you look at the Rams forums, many fans are turning on him in a big way.

As to Whitworth, he is the ultimate professional and says the best things about everyone. While I don’t think he lies, I think he chooses only the best parts of any person he’s discussing.

Can I still make Jared piping jokes anyways?

Then again Rudy had a lot of fight but he got â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  destroyed every play.

Size matters.

Good summation. I would only add that I think evidence is building that McVay is a boom/bust teacher. If you don’t respond to his particular communicative style/method, he becomes frustrated & negative. Darth Hoodie Belichick and Parcells had similarly Spartan leadership styles but they were also flexible enough to reach different personality types & get the best from them.

That pertains to both players and coaches, imo. Too many good coaches have bolted asap & too many players have failed to develop.

Btw, the only “closure” I believe JG got from McVay is that his assessment of Goff’s role in LAR’s failure to improve upon their early success was really out of proportion & blame game BS to divert attention from his own (McVay’s) failure to evolve himself and Snead’s mistakes in building the roster.

I remember the barely suppressed heat in Goff’s voice when asked about McVay’s expressions of regret for how he handled the situation; paraphrased as “Yeah, that’s nice, but he STILL said and did it…”. Doesn’t closure usually imply coming to peace or even forgiveness over something? I don’t think that’s the case here at all…

Goff has discernibly worked on his deficiencies & leaned into his strengths. Good teaching by empathetic but demanding coaches helped accelerate/enhance that evolution, imo. Can’t say the same for McVay, frustratingly. He leaned too heavily on Gurley & failed to develop enough support for him, for eg, prematurely ending his career, and now he’s doing the same to Stafford, imo.

DET plays LAR next year. A truly fascinating moment in the ongoing debate if they are both still in place.

Indeed. That will be a fun one to watch.

If your idea of fun is watching how many heads I can get to explode in the GDT before getting banned, then …YAY; fun !!

He’s got LMS. Little Man Syndrome is a very serious condition. There is no known cure.

Symptoms include talking way too much, sore neck from looking up all the time and a constant need for attention. Basically a chihuahua.
