There could be a lot of truth to this too. One thing this staff is good at is getting players to play better than they ever have before.
Goff has not only grown as a player, he’s grown as a human & a leader. Campbell is not just a coach, he’s a mentor in “man training” for all of these guys.
Goff is 5th and Brady 9th in total “throwaways.” Both are also relatively high in % of throws considered “poor” - Goff 11th and Brady 12th. I suspect that in both cases some throws assessed by the game reviewers as “poor” are actually deliberate throwaways - more than w/most QBs - but it’s impossible to say.
Here’s a plausible story. Goff and Brady can navigate a collapsing pocket, but neither has much “escapability.” And, obviously, they know this about themselves. So, relative to more mobile QBs, when trouble comes they’re more likely to throw the ball away (rather than try to run for it) and less likely to force throws when they have another down to play with. Which leads to fewer sacks and ints, but also a somewhat lower completion % than they would otherwise have.
So for those of you who like geeking out on this sort of thing, here’s an interesting stat comparison.
You’d expect that guys who’re sacked a lot also throw the ball away a lot since both of those (sacks, throwaways) reflect pressure, right? And it’s true: 9 of the 15 QBs with the most throwaways are also among the 15 most-sacked QBs. What’s interesting are the folks who’re on one list but not the other.
The 3 QBs who aren’t sacked much but throw the ball away a lot are Mahomes (#1 in throwaways, #24 in sacks), Carr (#4, #18) and your own Jared Goff (#5, #29). Goff and Mahomes have by far the biggest divergence in the two rankings. I think these two simply make better decisions than their peers when it comes to getting rid of the ball rather than taking sacks. I think it also suggests that, mobile as he is, Mahomes is NOT really a “running QB.”
On the flip side you have Fields and Burrows. Fields is #1 in sacks and #25 in throwaways. That’s a young man who always thinks he can escape the pressure. Burrows is #5 in sacks taken and #19 in throwaways.
The real extremes in this comparison are Mahomes and Goff, on one hand, and Fields, on the other. Insofar as fans tend to think that sacks are petty much a reflection of the OL, IMO Mahomes and Goff make their OL look a bit better than they are; Fields makes his look somewhat worse than it is.
