O’Connell, a third-round draft pick out of San Diego State last year, completed four of his six passes for 23 yards last season. He was expected to be Tom Brady’s backup until he was cut last Monday.
The Lions claimed O’Connell off waivers the next day, but he didn’t throw a pass in two series in Detroit’s preseason finale at Buffalo last Thursday night.
Essentially, the Lions picked O’Connell up for nothing, then Mayhew turned around and traded him to the Jets for a 7th Rd pick.
9/7/09: Lions acquire a 2011 seventh-round pick from New York Jets (later traded to 49ers) in exchange for QB Kevin O’Connell.
How a 12-2 Lions team with 30 players having been on IR is discounted from the COTY run is just another example of how finicky and short-sighted these things often are. That 11-game win streak after losing Hutch should have secured it for Dan. Right now, I’m feeling a significant DvE vibe and hope we open some cans of whoop-ass the next 3 weeks.
So until MCDC wins it for the AP I am not sure I can respect anyone or the award itself.
Turning around a whole franchise…over having a good season for these other fools.
I also do not love the award because it becomes so subjective. The best story tends to win. But when you look at this Lions Season you gotta ask how are they doing it?
And How about Tomlin. Absolute legend. And yet never won the AP award. Sorry but it is hard to get excited about an award that clearly is not getting it right.
It’s like MVP award……lions have much bigger goals. Last year was when DC should have won COTY. KOC is deserving if he gets it, but I sure he has bigger goals as well. That Packers game looms large.
It does confound me that Dan has not won COTY. Last season, we went 12-5 and Dan lost to an 11-6 Browns’ HC. Now, we’re 12-2 and someone else is the favorite. With this logic, neither Andy Reid or Bill Belichek should ever win.
Interesting question. AFC North is tops, IMO. Let’s see who Chicago hires, though. Campbell and O’Connell are my top 2 coaches in the NFL, no matter who’s the comparison. It’s the rest of the NFC North holding us back.
When the Lions win the next 3 games, win the division, have the #1 seed, and then go on to win the super bowl, there will be no doubt about who is COY. Especially since half our team is on the IR.
