The Red Wings will never win anything with Larkin as a 1C. He’s not that good.

Instead of wallowing and crying and pissing and moaning about the GM not getting him help, maybe he should’ve scored more than 5 goals in the teams last 20 games. Kind of pathetic that a 21 year old rookie in Marco Kasper can score 9 goals and be +10 over the last 20 games following the trade deadline, while Larkin only scores 5 and is -12.

But hey, glad we have a 1C that has never done anything in the league. FFS, guy has never even hit 80 points in a season. Something Raymond accomplished this year at 23 years old.

Why? Yzerman is right.

If Larkin needs Steve to pick up players at a deadline to keep a team’s morale up, Larkin is a shitty leader. HE’S THE CAPTAIN. Drive the morale. I’m sure it’s much more morale destroying to see your team’s captain make more than anyone else on the team and only score 5 goals during the playoff run while a rookie is doubling up his goal total than it is when a GM doesn’t bring a guy into the room and bump someone off the team.

Larkin is an overrated player whose only major accomplishment was being the fastest skater in an all-star minigame like 7 years ago. The real reason the Red Wings suck is because they won’t pay anyone more than Larkin and Larkin can’t even be a PPG player.

Anyone who thinks Steve adding a middle 6-type rental guy and throwing away high draft picks just to get swept in the first round is insane. This team isn’t close enough to make a deep run. You don’t give up your future just to say you made the playoffs when the result is going to be getting bounced in the first round.

These young guys arnt developing because they keep getting middle 6 guys! Sieder has gotten worse the last 2 years because he has no one to play next to.
Larkin and Raymond are the only 2 decent scorers. And i agree Larkin is a 2nd liner.

And theres no way in the world, Daniels, Kasper James and Nygard all develop to be top 6 fwds.

Odds are only 1 will actually develop to become a true top 6. And thats still 2-3 more years away! Same with Palika another 2-3 years away.
Augustine 2-3 years away

And what are they blocking Cossa for yet ANOTHER year because they got Talbot and mrazik.

So whats the plan? Let the current you guys (seider, raymond, evenson, solderbom, Johannson) all struggle to develop with the wings with no help for the next 3 years till the next batch of young guys finally get there. And by then you have to start paying those guys. And HOPE they ALL work out?

No. Go out and get a t6 forward and top 4 defender to help the young guys develop and get Cosa real reps! Thats what they can do to help this team. Its not about making the playoffs. Its about developing. Having veteran leadership.

Im sorry but these bottom 6 aged veterans they keep bringing in arnt motivating and developing anyone. They are just making them worse!

One good addition (kane was good but not any more) in 7 years. Cool.

Lets just pretend Larking is C1. Just so we dont have to look for a new first line C.

F1: Raymond, Larkin, Debrinkat (cool good enough)
F2: compher, Copp, Berrgin (EW thats a 3rd line)
F3: Mazur, Rass, Tarasanko (thats a 4th line)
F4: James, Kasper, Solderbom (cool all kids)

D1: Chirot, Seider (Chirot isnt a first liner)
D2 edvison, holl (holl isnt a 2nd pair)
D3: johanson, gustufson (sure)

They keep trying to fill the middle of the lineup. No. We have plenty of those guys. Get more top end help and that will push those guys down!

F1: Raymond, Larkin, Kat
F2: __, kasper,,
F3: Compher, Copp, terrasanko
F4: solderbloom, Rass, burrgin

Suddendly it doesnt look THAT bad if you get a 2 forwards.

Im not complaining. Im on your side on this Yzerman has been bad. Larkin has been a bad captain as well

I always said they should have traded him when steve got here because i knew it would take ~5 years to be competitive. But definitely not 7+

But steve NEEDS to get help on this team.

Minimum 1 T6 Forward and 1 top 2pair D.

Because aside from Kat and Kane hes brought literally nothing to this team to help the kids develop.

Goalie i will be OK with Cosa and one of the current guys. Who ever is better, cut the other. But cosa needs 20-40 starts.

And they have 24m in space. Yes not a tone. But plenty to get some NICE players.

The way i see it.

Get a FWD and DEF for 6-8m each.
Cut some fat off the roster. (Or trade them with a prospect as a cap dump)

Then fill out the rest of the roster with these “great prospects we have coming”

Hes been doing great in AHL for 3 years. Hes ready.

Unfortunately I think no. Has struggled the last 1/3 of this season. Wasn’t very good when I watched in person this year. Playoff game last night gave up 4 goals on like 19 shots and got pulled. Yzerman also talked about him not playing well after all-star break this year.

Right now I wouldn’t count on him at all. Would focus on getting a vet goalie to bridge until Augustine is ready

So, to me, the way you develop young guys is to get them on the ice. Filling the roster with more middling talent isn’t going to help them develop. You improve by playing more.

The Red Wings roster last season had
2019 1st round pick (Seider)
2020 1st round pick (Raymond)
2021 1st round pick (Edvinsson)
2022 1st round pick (Kasper)

And they’re all contributing at a solid level. You don’t throw the entire program out because you want to add a couple guys. I hope to god the Wings ownership is more patient than the fans are, because the Wings are about 3-4 years away from being a powerhouse when these young guys start to hit their prime and are surrounded my more, homegrown talent.

Sure, the FA contracts have been subpar, but Detroit has sucked. Unless you’re willing to overpay (and the Wings won’t), you’re getting mid level talent who’s only incentive in playing here is because they’re from Michigan or have ties to the area. The reality is, the NHL has a cap floor and you have to hit it and when you can’t draw decent FAs, you get guys like Copp and Compher to round out a roster while your actual talent develops.

Yzerman has shown he can draft in the first round, which is really where you want to hit since the NHL draft is so unpredictable. There’s no need to throw away draft capital for rentals when your team isn’t poised to make a deep run. If the Wings were sitting firmly in the playoff picture, sure, it’s different. Make a move to see if you can make a deep run. But you don’t mortgage the future when you’re a bubble team just to make the playoffs and get the boot in the first round.

IT DOESNT TAKE 10 YEARS TO BE COMPETITIVE!

What about the 2nd round picks?
What about all the prospects he let walk?

So what we are just gonna wait for 5 more years to have a full roster? And then not be able to sign any Vets because Kasper and Edvinson are gonna need paid next year.

No team in the NHL that’s competitive has a team of ONLY draft picks. You need FA vets. This team could make a good playoff run with a few vets.

Not only that YOU NEED VETERANS TO DEVELOP THE YOUTH!

You think Sieder is getting better playing with Holl and Chairot? Nope.
You think Kasper is getting better playing with Copp and Compher?
You think Edvinson and Johanson are getting better playing with Guataffson?

No they are not! GOOD Veterans help get the best out of young players.

Why hasnt Sieder taken that next step to become great? Because hes the best Defender on the ice. No one to help him. Might as well skate with 4 forwards.

Im not asking for a $10m+ all star. Just competent players. Debrinkat was a good signing! No do that for the defense!

Good players have to want to sign here man. You can want all the good players you want, but getting them to come here is a different deal. You can’t force good players to sign with your team.

Hell, we had to trade for Debrincat and I’m sure him being from Michigan was a reason he was fine coming and staying here.

What trade deadline deal was there that was made that if the Wings made would’ve turned them into a contender?

For what it’s worth, if you go out this offseason and bring back Kane (likely) and sign a Mitch Marner, you’ve got a playoff team. The wings need to move past this silly “No one makes more than Larkin” nonsense and pay for a game changer. Pay them enough to where they will actually come here.

A top 6 of Raymond-Larkin-Marner and Cat-Kasper-Kane is good enough to start making noise.
