Different sport but before you were born there was a GT college basketball team that was amongst the most fun of my lifetime. Entirely star power driven, not much defense but Kenny Anderson, Dennis Scott and Brian Oliver (known as Lethal Weapon Three) were pure bliss. For whatever reason that is what I always think of when I think of GT sports despite them winning a half Natty in football (with an aesthetically unpleasant team).

The Bobby Cremins days. That team was insanely fun. Anderson is one of the first shocker recruiting coups I can remember.

Yep. Then they ran into the Gran-mama, Augmon, Greg Anthony, Anderson Hunt UNLV team which likely remains the greatest college basketball team of my basketball watching lifetime.

Yeah, me too probably, that team was overwhelming. There might have been a UNC team that was almost as dominant, but only for 1 season iirc.

Crying Roy era? Was it a Psycho T team or are you talking about the Montross year near the end of Dean’s career.

I was too young to have watched Perkins, Jordan and Worthy’s team. Also too young to have watched Phi Slamma Jamma but my dad told me stories about them. And of course lots of vintage UCLA stories which was a whole 'nother level.

I thought it was a Vince Carter/Antawn Jamison team. Don’t remember the year, feels like early-mid 90s.

Also some of Nolan’s Arkansas teams were fantastic.

I can think of quite a few teams that didn’t win it all that were unbelievable. I’m an AZ fan and the Kansas team with Pierce, Lafrentz, Pollard, Vaughn, etc. that they upset was unbelievable. The AZ team with Elliott, Lofton, Cook, Kerr, Tolbert that lost a heartbreaker to the Mookir Blaylock, Stacy King Billy Tubbs led team was unbelievable. Kerr went like 1 for 9 from 3. Most wide open and I think he was like 57% for the year from 3. That OK team was awesome too. And neither of those teams one it due to Manning and the Miracles.

Single elimination tourneys are a bish.

We (AZ) beat them too. Three number ones. That Kansas team, that UNC team and the Ron Mercer and injured Kentucky team. Greatest couple of weeks of my sports fandom. Though stressful. Had to come back from double digit deficits against three double digit seeds in the last four-five minutes to get there. Cardiac cats through and through.

Yeah that Billy Tubbs team was a juggernaut. I still remember when they got upset by Danny Manning and Kansas in the championship game (after beating them 3 times that season I think?). That was a dour time in Norman.

That’s a good one. That Corliss and Scotty Thurman team was awesome. Hated them bc they ousted Mighty Mouse and Khalid Reeves in the final four before dispatching of Grant Hill and Duke.

Sorry for hijacking the draft thread everyone

I distinctly remember the heartbreak of losing to AZ in the sweet 16 with the Graham Bros. Damon Stoudamire went off and I believe hit the game winner.

The Desmond Mason team? That was his cousin Salim. And then AZ absolutely put it on the undefeated Illini for 56 minutes. We’re up fifteen with 4 left and then the zebras just relented to the home crowd let Dee Brown, Deron Williams and Luther Head literally tackle us for steals. Just one foul call and we’re onto the final four. The home cooking was so bad that Lute’s hair actually fell out of place which NEVER happened.

Salim was an unbelievable shooter. Right up there with Kerr. Hit that elbow pull-up in crunch time to beat you. That was an awesome basketball game.

Nvm, Mason had graduated. That was your great Gottleib led team.

Nah it was after the Desmond team (that was 98 I believe), but you’re right it was Salim. 79-78 on a Salim jumper with 2 seconds left.

It was the year after we made the final 4 with Tony Allen and John Lucas only to get upset by Georgia Tech in the last second, which brings us full circle.

Yep. Mason was earlier. I was thinking of Tony Allen.

He had just left as well. That 2005 team was the Graham Bros and not much else (and even then, mostly Joey).
