It was caught earlier yesterday that Nowaske was cut. Since he was scalped by Arizona from us to begin with, we went back and got him.
This was a guy that Shephard talked about others on the team mentioning how we’re going to need to see some help. (Nowaske and Cabinda gone left others in the LB room wondering wtf they were going to do.) (It was just a light-hearted comment from Shephard, by the way. Don’t make too much of what I just typed.)
Dan Campbell talked a lot about how much they loved Nowaske, and wanted to develop him at LB. They actually signed him to the active roster because teams were trying to poach him from the PS. I believe they had to let him go when CJ Gardner-Johnson got reactivated, and Arizona claimed him. I may have the player wrong but it was the end of December so it was him or McNeil maybe.
Yea likely more special teams related. Although when you put in a claim you dont know if you will get him. We did. I wouldn’t be buying property in Detroit just yet if I was Niemann.
That makes a lot more sense, and yeah to me this is more of an indictment on how they felt the KR/PR coverages looked. Backup LB’s primarily play ST to be able to stop big returns and while I know every team was trying things out, it’s possible Fipp isn’t too keen on how coverage units looked.
It’s more likely we are trading Campbell. Clearly the team has put their foot down that Barnes is our forever MLB, and treatened a teamwide mutiny. The Lions have no choice but to move Campbell and give Barnes the MLB role he earned since stepping in the door in 2021. Nowaske was claimed to be the backup.
