Yeah, it’s hard to simply land on stupid, but he’s a bit off in some regard.
I don’t even know if it’s that. Sure, he’s probably not savant-level, but it’s hard to anticipate when receivers aren’t where they’re supposed to be.
Obviously, no one knows if this is really the case, but it’s an explanation that fits the facts. If the wideouts aren’t where they’re supposed to be 5-10% of the time, that would explain Goff opting to throw short to the routes where he can see guys open rather than assume they’ll make the cut that they’re supposed to make.
A bunch of guys who’ve never played together thrown in with a new offense (that may be flawed itself) not being on the same page makes a lot more sense to me than a Pro Bowler just forgetting how to play quarterback.

Agreed with all of it until you went there. He was a Pro Bowler, but that was almost three seasons ago. Goff was not playing like a Pro Bowl QB for two full seasons before he came here. I agree the WR’s not being where they are supposed to be is causing some major issues for Goff this year. Not that it seems like Amon Ra is starting to grasp the offense much better and he has Reynolds I would expect his confidence level to start to rise. Lets see how he finishes the year.

Just look at the guys talking here it’s the same ones that thought Patricia should get a 3rd year. Some guys just have to get run over by a truck before they get things.
There is a hudge difference between simplified and the pee wee version as you said. Is there even another NFL team that has 0 playaction ?

It’s funny how all of a sudden in one game they all knew right were to be.
I touched on the no -play action - a couple times, during games I said “hey try play-action” in hopes that Goff would do so. but yeah I thought it was quite noticeable that we did not use it as a rule.

So you’re contending that it’s far more logical that Jared Goff forgot how to play quarterback for 2/3 of the season and just all of a sudden remembered?

There two ends of the spectrum and the truth lies somehwere in between. Coaching has been pretty good, especially on the defensive side. Offensively, Lynn, Brunell, and Randel El are the biggest questions marks and the results say they have been poor coaches. Campbell has been a true leader of men this year and seems to have 100% buy in from his players. That is tough to do this late in the season when you have nothing to play for. One thing that stands out as a negative in in game management. Campbell has made many mistakes this year, but those are things that can be corrected.
Holmes has had some good moments and some bad. He seems to have put together a solid 1st draft with potential to be great. Sewell is looking axactly like we had hoped and appears to be a home run. Amon Ra should turn into a solid #3 at worst. Jermar Jefferson has looked like a solid backup RB and a good 7th rounder. We hit a home run with Jerry Jacobs as a UDFA and AJ Parker looked solid as well. Levi, McNeil, Melifonwu, and Barnes all have a lot to prove. There hasn’t been a single thing that lends me to believe they will be a bust, but it is way early.
He definitely hit on Charles Harris and Anzalone is free agency for what they signed for, as well as finding guys like Evan Brown. He missed on Tyrell Williams, Perriman, and Dunbar, but none of those guys signed for much money so were they truly a miss? His biggest mistake so far is the Trinity Benson trade. The Goff trade is still very much up in the air and will be until we find out what we turn the picks into. Anything Goff can provide in the meantime is a bonus.
As far as QB, Goff was absolutely horrendous for most of the season. Were there some reasons for that that were out of Goff’s control? Sure, but then you have plays like throwing out of bounds twice on 4th down. Give credit where credit is due though. Goff has played like a completely different QB since returning from injury and getting Josh Reynolds. Will he continue that play for the rest of the season? Who the hell knows, but if he does, that is a QB I can live with, at least for a couple years.
At the end of the day, we knew this team was in a terrible spot and without Stafford we were going to suck. I was expecting a top 5 pick with a realistic shot at the 1st pick. I honestly thought Houston might not win a game this year and I was thinking we would win 4-6.

My concern continues to be these giant red flags.
There’s been so many red flags around Dan’s competence that people are wondering if the flag is actually pink. It might not even be a flag at all.
No motion on offense? Meh, not a big deal. It’s “simplified.”
Ben Johnson as potential OC, even though Dan has assumed play-calling duties, when Ben could get more experience? Meh, not a big deal. Dan is “learning.”
Poor clock management? Meh, not a big deal. Dan is a leader of men, these things will come.
1 win? Meh, not a big deal, Dan is stuck with Matt Patricia’s slow-footed defensive linemen. Also, salary cap.
The list goes on.
Now, I’m sure I’ll get attacked for daring to be concerned about my favorite team winning 1 goddamn game out of 12. It’s become “Drink the Kool-Aid and shut up” around here.

DET is actually 11th in motion AT the snap, indicating that the scheme/playcalling isn’t totally static.
The overall motion ranking looks like one of those deceptive things - a ton of teams bunched together with very similar numbers; the ranking could swing quite a bit without meaning anything much.
Pre-snap motion is more about getting the defense to declare their intentions, right ? Man or zone, etc. The kind of subtle shizzle that Kupp & Woods do so well depends on route adjustments they make largely based on a D’s reaction to motion, but I agree with the other posters who think it just confuses less experienced guys if they have to read the defense like that.
It was just a week or two back that DC was talking about route depth & spacing still being an issue. Hardly surprising the staff might want them to focus on the basics & forego the subtleties. It could also be a Goff or scheme/playcalling issue, too, of course, but I’d bet it’s more on the WRs.
