Maybe. Personally I think it’s about incentives. By day three nobody is getting fired for missing. So you take your shot on your guys even if consensus says to do otherwise. That compounds and you’re left with a selection of a few top 100ish guys down at 180 or whatever. Obviously top 100 hasn’t been what it used to be with the NIL situation and that could be part of it. But to be honest I’ve always felt that way.
This presumes insight into his interiority which you don’t have, and is in no way justified.
Now, did he deviate from his formula? I think that actually happened in 2023, with the selections of Hooker and Martin. But I think this could just as easily be attributed to the back end of that particular class (and subsequent draft classes) than a change in Brad’s psychology.
And as I’ve said before, the evidence of a change in philosophy or tactics demonstrates exactly the opposite of what you claim – if he were truly enamored with his process, he wouldn’t change it.

Yeah and that’s 100% possible too. Just like in fantasy, it’s more palatable to “reach” the further down the board you go. It’s tricky to really say with any certainty from the outside looking in.
Right. We needed guys other teams would WANT to sign for big money, and we’re just now reaching that point with the state of the roster.
Though I may be getting ahead of myself on our 2025 and 2026 draft classes, it sure does appear that 2024 is a performance outlier. Tennessee had a really good draft while hosting in 2019, and I think the Steelers recent draft may work out, but otherwise the returns on host city draft classes are quite wretched. Which makes sense given all of the additional demands.

You are not understanding my claim then. I did not write that he became enamored of his process but rather his success. I also did not claim any special perspective on his interiority.
Hooker, Martin, Manu, Vaki, TeSlaa were all project players who BH invested significant capital into drafting. This was a deviation from his prior process of leaning heavily on large program players with proven tape, a process that was wildly successful.

I didn’t see him at all this preseason. He must have been running at least a little better than he did last preseason though, right? Because he was really bad last preseason. Generated nothing on the ground. Was stunned that they signed him to the practice squad.
A tiny bit better, yeah. Really a miniscule amount.

I think that’s exactly it. I do not think he puts a ton of value on picks rounds 3 and later. I think he looks at what’s available to him and views a handful of players worth drafting from that point on. So the guys he wants he’s willing to pay a premium number of draft picks to go get.
He comes from an organization that values proven players over draft picks. An organization that doesn’t put a ton of value in those picks.
I do think this way of thinking is both accurate and flawed.
Sure late round picks are a major crap shoot but you can’t win the lotto if you don’t buy a ticket. 5 tickets have better odds than one.
You don’t get an ARSB with this way of thinking.
But if you look at who he has drafted and who has stuck on the roster. Most of them came in the first three rounds.

Good analogy as far as the lottery tickets. I think when he gets back to drafting good football players that fit us from good schools he does very well.
Them haymaker home run swings on the big guys with mearsurables just didnt work out.
This year though looks VERY promising
Rolder, Abney, SGH and even Law was looking like he could be a dude
Abney & SGH will likely have package roles early on in the season, and I think they ball out

I agree, but isn’t that the case for just about every NFL team? I mean, if you didn’t get picked in the first hundred picks, they may be a reason. OF COURSE there are many outlier cases. But someone (who is better than me at statistics) on here put up a chart about the draft in regards to where players were drafted vs. who is a starter. It skewed pretty heavily toward the first three rounds, which makes sense.
So I feel like those round 4-7 picks (and sometimes the 3rd) are more in the ‘gray area.’ Do you want a lot of chances to ‘hit’ on a player? Or do you want to package them for a player you have added confidence in? It seems hard to determine which of those is objectively ‘correct.’ You may have roughly equal strength arguments on each side.

Yeah, no official word if it’s a 53 man roster move yet for Conklin. However, the lions already have the maximum of six veterans on the practice squad.
So either someone’s getting released from the 53 man, or one of the vets is getting released from the practice squad. We’ll have to wait and see what the corresponding move is.
And makes me wonder who is getting moved and why now? What was the point of cutting him just to bring him back.
Maybe Conklin wanted to see if he’d catch onto someone else’s roster?

We knew that our 53 man roster included some roster shenanigans. We will see who gets released, but I am wondering if Brad wanted to wait for the waiver claims to be done. We may have a guy that we know another team was eyeballing. If that team claimed another guy for the position yesterday, then Brad may feel better that he can get the player through waivers this time around.
Could be. He was vet minimum fighting for the tight end three spot.
Could’ve been in agreement between both of them. Conklin wanted to see if he could get a raise and more rep somewhere else. Lions wanted to see if they could get an upgrade. Neither happened so they’re coming back to each other.
