Lions sign OL Ben Bartch

Eh, many would have said the same thing of the Bears before last season. Many on here did, they were bringing in our cast-offs and spent a bunch of money on a center no one liked (in here especially). The Panthers had a great rushing line with our new starting center in the middle (who started the season as a backup). On and on. Even our elite line had a guy we brought back in Glasgow who had been terrible for 3 years in Denver and many thought wouldn’t start.

You just never know how these things will turn out. But I have noticed that the best lines aren’t usually the lines with the most capital poured into them.

There aren’t any.

Any thoughts on editing the thread title to spell Bartch correctly?

Not a big deal, but I have a little OCD.

We were 13th in rushing yards and the Panthers were 18th. I would hardly call them great.

I think Gibbs and D-Mo are a smidge better than Dowdle and Chuba.

Also… The Lions had 64 more rushing yards over the 17 game season… so the Panthers were within 4 yards per game of the Lions…. with inferior RBs.

Love it. Who you have us drafting though

Many here say LOG fact is this Since 2020, the former Jaguars and 49ers lineman has started 24 games and has the versatility to play both guard positions Now we have depth also at ROG . He may win LOG spot but we have 6 at least og an C players who can in most cases switch positions that is depth Mahog…Frazer..Juice…Bartch…Mays..Rat even Niese 3 can play center all could play OG That is solid inside Depth if they all make it on roster. IMO when the final roster for OL is put together for season we will feel very good about OL an the depth. Remember we still have draft an FA signing during camps that are released or even trades I remind fans *Devin Cochran the Lons resigned right away in Jan an he split 46 games in college almost eqqual at Rot an Lot He played well early an made a couple trps from PS to cover for injuries last season He has a shot at camp.

Fair enough I was going off memory, but you get my overall point. Many times the best lines don’t look like they’ll be the best lines ahead of time.

Well I know Brad has a good amount of you think so.

You may have misunderstood. I’m saying we were not good and the Panthers were even worse. Yes at one time when Ben and Rags were here we were the standard for every team to envy. That is no longer the case.

I agree I do like what we have done. I think are LOT is not on roster yet. How rest shake out will be interesting to follow . Center i think is set Rat an Pene are set but ROT an Log starters have to be found an I think the backups are open . We should IMO have a very good OL with quality depth. I doubt we draft more than a starting OT for the OL

Ragnow’s not coming back through that door though, that’s a one in a generation type of player. But other teams have managed to put together great OLs with much lesser centers.

That is true but sometimes a line is bad right were you thought and even said it would be.

I think Mays is a huge upgrade over Glasgow (2025 edition)…

and that will go along ways towards getting the rushing attacks towards the top 5 again.

I also think Decker was barely serviceable with his health situation in 2025.

Couple that with uncertainty at LG many weeks… and the Lions O-line was shaky many weeks.

.

The Panthers O-line had some injuries in 2025 as well, but I think they did really well with some of their top guys out.

.

Mays was pretty dang good even with some shuffling of the players around him. I am optimistic that he will boost our O-line performance.

also… #Bartch…. not Bertch.

I think a signing like Mays last year and we make the playoffs and if we got in, who knows, it was a great year to get in .

That’s why Im down on Brad and blame him , dude choose to be bad on that Oline had the money but he believed Glasgow and practically a rookie would be good. One quilty guy on that inside and we are probably good enough to make the playoffs. Just a blown opportunity.

I am certainly not positive about the reports…..

but there has been talk that Frank surprised the Lions when he announced his retirement on June 2nd.

Free agency was long gone… and the draft was over a month earlier.

There was no simple pivot for that scenario.

That’s the part we don’t know , I remember reports on when the season ended but not sure if they were just rumors.

How dare you!?

I can’t say that I am optimistic. I’m more in the he can’t be any worse opinion. I am of the opinion it is not all about talent across the line that will make a run game work. It takes a coordinated effort of everyone and execution. When Ben was here Mahogany looked like a future star. Last year he looked lost and at times had no idea who to block. With Ben the TEs had precise timing on their wham blocks. Last year they were late or did not show up at all. Sure the OGs got the blame because they let the DT go free into the backfield and blow up the play. Well that was the TEs wham block to make and he wasn;t there. At this point I have no confidence in Hank and I will just take a wait and see attitude. I’m not drinking the kool aid until I see some better results.

I’m pinning my hopes on Petzing. If Ben can be the reason we were good, then so can Petzing. And they always had a good run game in Arizona, despite the utter lack of passing threats. We’ll have by far the best passing attack he’s ever worked with.
