They can take next year’s savings and move them up to this year through restructures. So a 2% savings this year, and a 0% savings next year. Same as 1% this year and 1% next year.

The team knows it has too many other obligations than to pay their top 2 backs upwards of 30m AAV between Gibbs and Monty. Just not tenable with other young stars coming up for extensions. That Gibbs contract is going to be sick.
Monty’s agent would have been looking at the back end of his extension and clearly see that Dmo wasn’t going to get paid that money in DET. It was probably quite clear in their initial discussions about his role and that’s why they went nowhere. Monty needs to max his earnings somewhere, the Lions helped him find a place that can afford him.
The Lions have been aware of the need to move Monty for a while and this breakup did not happen because Monty stamped his feet about his reps a couple of times. Monty wants a few more years of $6-10m a year and he might get that in Houston. Was never happening in DET.

Money also rolls over to the following season. There is no money “lost” or “wasted” in the NFL. Another reason on looking at cap savings just for 2026 is just incorrect.
