Longest Active Final 8 Appearance Droughts

, , ,

Of the 4 Major Sports. NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL.

These are all the active droughts over 10 years long.

Red Wings 13 years

Pistons 18 years!

Yet these 2 franchises seam to be in no rush to get back to that level. They have a core. They dont have many picks. The kids are gonna need contracts soon. The time is NOW! If not now when? Whats the excuse?

The fact the Wings are in the same class as Utah and Buffalo is sickening. Thats what current NHL players think of the Red Wings. “That loser franchise?”

I have come to find that there are a few people on this board who have this mindset about Detroit sports teams:

Either it’s: “These God awful worthless teams Suck and the whole organization is a rotting cancer from the top down”

OR

(Insert whatever they will say for up to 3 or 4 weeks after they win a championship here).

The OP is the statistician of the group.

I posted a bunch of awful swings and misses from both teams in the last 15 years… 65 million to Monty Williams isn’t trying? The ■■■■ outta here :joy:

Wings and Pistons both figured out coaching.

But what player acquisition have they done other than over the hill bandaids.

I only give SteveY half credit for Kat because he wanted to play with Kane.

Both teams have been borderline playoff teams the last 3 years. What have they done to take that next step to become real playoff teams borderline championship contenders? Nothing

This is the mindset of a good chunk of fans:

“We’ve been terrible for 10 years? Now we’ve finally built a sustainable system with our own homegrown players? Let’s TRADE everything and slam the window shut on long-term success for the chance to maybe win a single championship! Also, if the GMs trade everything and it doesn’t work out and we go back to being terrible, the GM was an idiot!”

DeBrincat was acquired before Kane. Kane signed here after we got Cat because he wanted to play with Cat. Not the other way around.

Because thats what CHAMPIONSHIP teams do!

Theres 2 types of teams.

Option A: Draft develop. Decent playoff team. Never make a big move. Win few playoff games. Stay good for 10 years. Never win a championship. But ticket sales are WAAAY up.

Option B: have a good core. Trade anything else. Build a champ contender. Compete for a championship for 3-5 years. Then yes rebuild.

Your NEVER gonna get to championship level with 100% home grown talent and bandaids. MAYBE in the NFL. Because its a much more level playing field. But the other 3. You HAVE to add talent in FA & Trades to win a championship.

so yes i would rather have 5 years of championship contender and 5 years of rebuild. Vs 10 years of good team and 0 champs. Yes its a risk. However you have to risk it for the biscuit. No sacrifice no victory

It seams to me like the Pistons and Wings only care about selling out LCA vs actually winning. Because 2017-2020 the arena was empty. 2021 was covid. 2022-2023 was empty.

So FINALLY in 2024 to now they are decent, selling out a decent amount. And are to afraid to make a move and fail and go back to empty arenas.

This is true.

Yeah….lets bitch about a first place team again… :man_facepalming:

Kat signed before Kane. Kane came to okay with Kat

I’m not going to get upset that kids are calling the red wings a “loser” franchise after being down 10 years. I got to watch this team make the playoffs for 30 straight years and go 4-3 in the finals. That run had to come to an end eventually. Now they’re close to being back among the contenders. I’m not bothered about the wings. They’re fine.

Can you show me the specific players that you just quoted?

I looked but I’m having a hard time finding it.

Hockey is not football… You build and then add when you’re in your window… The Wings aren’t there yet (they’re close)

Basketball is player driven… Those guys get together and decide to play together (Heat, LA (both teams), Boston, Brooklyn)… Look at OKC, they built their team the same way the Stones did, I prefer this method as a mid level franchise bc you’re never going to get 2-3 superstars to sign here

hency why you TRADE in basketball.

OKC made 2 trades for their starting 5. One is a MVP finalist btw.

And wtf you mean the wings arnt in their window??? What are they waiting for?

Sure some the kids will come up. But what makes me think they will be better than the bandaids on the team?
Kane - MBN

Appleton - Danielson

JVR - Dimitri

Guastafson - Wallender

Gibson - Augustine

Talbot - Cosa

Lateral moves across the board.

What if a star player doesn’t want to come here?? You scream “YOU TRADE” ATF you want but if a player doesn’t want get traded to Detroit it most likely won’t happen…especially if said player has a NTC….

You mean SGA? They traded for him in his 2nd year and it took 4 years after that before he was even an all star. And it’s been 6 years since the trade!! Big stretch there buddy :joy: he was developed over a loooong period, just like the Pistons roster

Hockey is not football or basketball, it’s more like baseball,L… It takes lots of time to develop prospects, which is why we’re finally starting to see results in year 6/7 of the Yzerplan

OKC traded for SGA. Thats not home grown and not a over the hill bandaid. not asking the pistons for a superstar trade. But at least a relevant trade

See back to chart. Name a single rebuild in NHL HISTORY that takes 10+ years.

What yall are saying. Wait for the kids. Then develop THEN make a move. Aka 4+ years to complete for a cup? So 16+ year rebuild?

You realize some players contracts will be up by then right? the window will stay closed unless you make a move to open it

I’m confused, you want the Pistons to trade for someone that’s going to take 4 years to DEVELOP into an all star? I thought you wanted them to win now?

Name a single team that had as many bad contracts as the Wings that turned it around faster

Please stop talking about hockey.

I must have missed all the bad contracts the last 4 years. For the wings. Or the next 4 years. Again. Why NOT now?

and SGA was rookie of year. Super star in the making. Not like they traded for a nobody with 5 first round picks. Again not asking the pistons to do that.

But how bout trade for a starter. they havent added a starter. All depth. (On a championship roster)
