This Lions defense just gave up 30, 24, and 27 to the Cowboys, Packers, and Giants respectively, just lost Brian Branch for the year, and are now going up against that Rams offense.
This post is so spot on! CJGJ has more into, sacks, tackles than Phillips, Q, and Sauce put together since the deadline. I know there is bad blood there, but for an extra Mil or 2, CJ was available to come play strong, free or slot for free. That was the move to make.
For what itās worth⦠this is the first thread I can remember where every single post makes a valid point. No trolling, no real personal attacks, just intelligent debate.. Bravo!
Going into the 2024 off-season, I felt a lot more like Nate and Marty, and going into this off-season my pendulum swayed over to the camp that Wrath and Curious are in⦠why?
We were quarter of football away from a SB in Dan and Brads 3rd year. We knew Gibbs, Laporta, Branch, Mac, Kerby, and Campbell were all solid to great picks⦠we knew Hutch, Sewell, and Ra were franchise cornerstones⦠and we were pretty sure Goff was āour guy,ā but the fantasizing over Lamar, Allen, and talking about QBs like Willis, Levis, Young, AR15, Hooker etc was still prevalent in the 23-24ā off-season.
Then Goff and the offense overcame a depleted D, won 15 games, and be posted a 110 plus rating while throwing nearly 40 TDs and suddenly it felt like we had OUR QB to the masses. Some of us were in the cap at the time of the trade, or at least in the 2023 off-season (begging to stay away from Pickett or Willis)ā¦.
This off-season was a bit unique⦠Anzo wanted more money, Frank was at least considering retiring (and did), and Decker had been questionable to play most weeks despite fighting through it. Monty has ceded the primary role to Gibbs, Glasgow was coming off one of his worst years, and Reader was getting up there in age, and in the final year of his deal.
Brad didnāt extend or restructure any of the ākey vetsā nor did he push bad money into the cap to make more roomā¦. Why?
I could be 100% wrong⦠but in February of 2025- Brad Holmes and Dan knew/believedā¦
Goff, Sewell, Gibbs, Ra, Jamo, and maybe Laporta were the offense for the next 3-4 yearsā¦
Hutch, Mac, Arnold, Jack, Barnes, Kerby and Branch were the defense for the next 3-4 yearsā¦
Thatās 13 of 22 starters, and 11 of them were extended or had 3 year plus windows left on their contracts prior to 2025 (I think they already knew Hutch and Jamo were getting paid since zero performance related activity took place prior to the contracts)ā¦. Now we have some things to consider with Branch and Laporta, but Iād bet at least one is a Lion the next 4 years, if it bothā¦
Fast forward to the off-season and we add Tyliek, Reed, Rat, and have a combo of Frazier and Mahogany to fill at least 3, but potentially 4 more roles, and then the much debated Teslaa trade could potentially give us one more as our WR3..
Those 5, plus the above 11 give us 16 starters for the next 2-4 plus years⦠and Branch and Laporta are still here and could be stayingā¦
I think we see Edge and OL in rounds 1 and 2 of the draft, and then bodies at CB and OL later in the draftā¦
I feel like a cheap Vet LB, DT, TE, and a solid safety signing is all this team needs to be better next year than thisā¦. All the contracts will be backloaded and we will stay very competitive for the next 3-4 years.
Thereās still plenty of time for him to screw up and prove why heās been cut loose multiple times around the league. Yes, with BB out we having a crying need for a player like him, but heās also a me-first hothead and weāll see what happens.
Agreeā¦. But that is the challenge with trades⦠Phillips? I donāt think heās an Eagle next year, but maybe. Sauce? I donāt think it will matter⦠the Colts were fools Gold⦠that team without Taylor wasnāt a contenderā¦. Now that team wonāt have a QB next year⦠Iām not really understanding the Cowboys at all⦠Williams and Clark arenāt cheap, they will be 29 and 31 next year, and Pickens will be a 25M plus WR to keep. Itās like they tried to salvage the season, but used a lot of the haul they got for Micah?
Justin Simmons and or T Mathieu would be guys Iād be on the phone with now. Depending on what is ACTUALLY KNOWN about Kerby, I think both would be the wayā¦. Mathieu is call today. He could play SS, FS, NB in a pinch.
This thread was started as a reminder to try and shame people for having an opinion from over a month ago. Iām glad that some of the posts have been decent, but it was not started in good faith at all.
J Phillips, Q Williams, and Sauce are all very, very good playersā¦.But
Sauce rating when targeted was up from 60 as rookie to 80 plus the past 2 plus⦠lower rating, less impact plays, more dinged up each year.
Q turning 29 and hasnāt had more than 6 sacks since 22ā, and wonāt this year.
Phillips missed 9 and 13 games in 23ā and 24ā and was on downward spiral of production until this year. Heās on pace for 6 sacks this Year btw, so not really an āimpactā player.
of these 3 trades⦠2 teams will likely miss the playoffs, and depending what happens tonight, the other could have a losing record since the trade, and they were the #1 seed before itā¦
People on this forum who hoped for a trade (again, over a month ago) were attacking the philosophy and upset about the team losing. You created this thread specifically to attack the people, but in particular, to attack me.
You have the problem here, and the obsession, and frankly, itās a bit weird that youāre still going on about it.
Lions are pretty close not making the playoffs . I feel lions shouldāve made a move. We can agree to disagree. Or maybe pick up a vet db, just for some depth.
Iām fully aware of that. I mean Brad his a very calculated approach to things, which I am good with. What I am not good with is the bellyaching that goes on here because Brad doesnāt do what fans think he should do. I have the same resentment about the Tigers and Red Wingsā¦its the same bellyaching from fans who have no idea how to run a team.
