Montez Sweat to Bears

Newest Chicago Bers DE Montez Sweat indicated that heā€™s not currently ready to sign an extension. ā€œI just want to consider everything around me before I make a decision.ā€

That doesnā€™t seem unreasonable in the least.

Iā€™m not sure why this is shocking or why anything else would be expected.

This doesnā€™t alter my love for French fries one bit.

Key ingredient in Pootine.

Its ā€œshockingā€ because typically the team would have already worked out an extension deal prior to committing a premium asset to acquire the player. Those guys walk into the building knowing they are getting a new deal and its announced shortly after the trade. As an example look at when the Bears traded for Khalil Mack. The numbers for his deal were reported by Adam Shefter the same day of the trade. Then the next day the numbers were ā€œconfirmedā€ and an official announcement was put out.

Thatā€™s a nice way of saying ā€œIā€™m not sure if I want to play with this shite team for an extended period of timeā€

ā€œWhile heā€™s having a strong sack season, Sweat has never produced double-digit sacks,ā€ he said. ā€œAnd while the sacks are there for Sweat this season, his pass rush win rate ā€” which evaluates him on far more plays than just the handful that result in QB takedowns ā€” is way down. He has just an 8% pass rush win rate at edge this season, which ranks 52nd. He has had higher win rates than that in the past ā€”it was 14% in 2022 ā€” but he has never exceeded 18% (in 2020), which is only a shade above average for an edge rusher. Sweat is also already 27 years old, meaning thereā€™s a good chance heā€™s at his peak and not still ascending toward it.ā€

Lions fans should love GM Ryan Poles:

The Bears played the Commies a few weeks ago and Young had one of his best games as a pro. Its interesting that Ryan Poles had no interest in him.

Hey, give the player all the leverage so he can maximize his contract. Love it.

yeah Sweat has alot of power here, outside of getting the franchise tag

the situation with roquan smith was an omen for bears fans, they just didnt see it.

The thing is Young would have been much cheaperā€“both in draft compensation and likely the contract he would command.

Buying a used Pontiac Aztec is also cheaper than a brand-new BMW. Thereā€™s a reason for that.

Very true. LOL. But if youā€™re going to get ripped off, might as well try to aim low, not high.

While Kerrigan was undoubtedly sad over Sweat and Youngā€™s departures, someone else in his family was even more upset.

Kerriganā€™s wife, Jessica, shared a video of the coupleā€™s daughter, Haysie, learning that her favorite player (Sweat) had been traded.

She was none too happy.

As for Sweat, heā€™s obviously eager to sign a long-term deal. Sweat is playing this season on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract. Not so fast.

ā€œI just want to consider everything around me before I make a decision,ā€ Sweat said.

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Atlanta Falcons wanted Sweat and were working with Washington on a deal, but the Bears offered more, and the Commanders took Chicagoā€™s offer.

Sweat is from Georgia, and returning home to play appealed to him.

While the Bears may be concerned about their ability to re-sign Sweat, they can apply the franchise tag on him, securing his rights for 2024.

Would I be right in saying that if the Bears were to fail to agree a deal with Sweat and end up having to sign another DL FA at the top of the market this off season which they would have to do and have the cap space to do that the two would cancel each other out and they wouldnā€™t get a comp pick?

Same would be true if they tag him and he leaves in FA 2025? Given how much cap space they have and will likely have a rookie QB next year they can afford to give him 3 years 80 million or something stupid like than and it shouldnā€™t affect them cap wise
