Newest Chicago Bers DE Montez Sweat indicated that heās not currently ready to sign an extension. āI just want to consider everything around me before I make a decision.ā
That doesnāt seem unreasonable in the least.
Iām not sure why this is shocking or why anything else would be expected.
Its āshockingā because typically the team would have already worked out an extension deal prior to committing a premium asset to acquire the player. Those guys walk into the building knowing they are getting a new deal and its announced shortly after the trade. As an example look at when the Bears traded for Khalil Mack. The numbers for his deal were reported by Adam Shefter the same day of the trade. Then the next day the numbers were āconfirmedā and an official announcement was put out.
āWhile heās having a strong sack season, Sweat has never produced double-digit sacks,ā he said. āAnd while the sacks are there for Sweat this season, his pass rush win rate ā which evaluates him on far more plays than just the handful that result in QB takedowns ā is way down. He has just an 8% pass rush win rate at edge this season, which ranks 52nd. He has had higher win rates than that in the past āit was 14% in 2022 ā but he has never exceeded 18% (in 2020), which is only a shade above average for an edge rusher. Sweat is also already 27 years old, meaning thereās a good chance heās at his peak and not still ascending toward it.ā
While Kerrigan was undoubtedly sad over Sweat and Youngās departures, someone else in his family was even more upset.
Kerriganās wife, Jessica, shared a video of the coupleās daughter, Haysie, learning that her favorite player (Sweat) had been traded.
She was none too happy.
As for Sweat, heās obviously eager to sign a long-term deal. Sweat is playing this season on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract. Not so fast.
āI just want to consider everything around me before I make a decision,ā Sweat said.
According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Atlanta Falcons wanted Sweat and were working with Washington on a deal, but the Bears offered more, and the Commanders took Chicagoās offer.
Sweat is from Georgia, and returning home to play appealed to him.
While the Bears may be concerned about their ability to re-sign Sweat, they can apply the franchise tag on him, securing his rights for 2024.
Would I be right in saying that if the Bears were to fail to agree a deal with Sweat and end up having to sign another DL FA at the top of the market this off season which they would have to do and have the cap space to do that the two would cancel each other out and they wouldnāt get a comp pick?
Same would be true if they tag him and he leaves in FA 2025? Given how much cap space they have and will likely have a rookie QB next year they can afford to give him 3 years 80 million or something stupid like than and it shouldnāt affect them cap wise
