My Impressions based off of AZ-DET

I also said gets to a SB here but sure its just a matter of time before i raise him above Stafford. So accomplishing something meaningful that this organization has never done, in the playoffs, is a foregone conclusion now and no indicator of the quality of QB play?

If he didn’t accomplish that under the circumstances he wouldn’t be the 2nd best Lion QB of all-time…

So if i state that if he gets us to a SB he passes Stafford, that would suffice? If so then yes, he’s best QB in franchise history. But anything short of that I just can’t say it. Like they aren’t on level terms by a long shot. But SB is the ultimate accomplishment so getting to that game would and should be enough to justifiably put him on top.

It still is really hard for me to wrap my head around it though because i think Matt Stafford is the better QB. By a pretty decent margin too.

So, if Goff didn’t have all that talent on offense, he would be Staffordesqe in his Detroit tenure is your belief, or so it sounds like.

I view it similar to the Gibbs/Sanders discussion: wo of the best RB’s to ever wear the Lions uniform.

Stafford and Goff are two of the best QB’s to play for the Lions. Stafford was far more a gunslinger while Goff is far more accurate.

I suspect when it’s done they will be QB 1a and 1b just glad to watch them play as Lions(although I enjoyed Stafford at UGA as well).

Oh a 1000000% without all the talent Goff is ā€œStaffordesque.ā€ Is that really in question?

As far as the Gibbs/Sanders discussion, yeah Gibbs is going to have to accomplish so much and far beyond wand Barry did to even be in the conversation for me personally. Like really??? There are other teams outside of Detroit…he has so many other greats to pass before he even approaches the GOAT of all RBs.

Matt played with one of the top 5 WRs of all time.

Jared has been far more consistent than Matt ever was. I think it’s hard to argue that Matt was a better Detroit Lions QB than Jared. If you are talking overall careers then Matt’s time with the Rams probably shifts that back in his direction for now.

Consistency matters.

It’s significant easier to be consistent under Jared’s circumstances than Matt’s.

The only way what you are suggesting makes sense is if you want to ignore all other factors as to why that is. I am not going to do that because for me personally, that’s ridiculous.

I think Matt and Jared are both great quarterbacks. But Matt didn’t win anything here so i’m curious as to why you are holding Jared to a different standard of winning a Super Bowl? Especially when Stafford couldn’t even win a playoff game here. Now you can argue that Stafford didn’t have the same team around him that Jared does, but he has a pretty good team out in Los Angeles. Are you aware over the last three years (+5 games this year) that Jared leads all quarterbacks in yards and touchdowns? He has 113 TDs and the next closest is Matt Stafford with 96 (these numbers very slightlydepending on which site you use, but they are close ). They definitely have different skill sets, but I kind of like the QB who is super accurate, knows where to go with the ball, and doesn’t turn it over a ton. Plus, Goff doesn’t really get hurt. This is not a knock against Stafford, but Jared Goff is certainly in the conversation of who’s the best Detroit quarterback of all time.

Ok so Jared leads all QBs in passing yards and touchdowns. This was the basis of your entire comment above…so is he the best QB in the NFL? Conclusion has to be yes right?

And if it’s not yes, then why?

I’m holding Jared to a different standard because of not only circumstances being light years different, but because Stafford is just a better QB. And for an inferior QB to be considered better than the guy better than him, he needs to go above and beyond to be crowned the GOAT.

It’s nothing different than Tom Brady. If he wins 4 SBs…he’s not the consensus GOAT. He’s in the conversation sure but there’s arguments to be made. It took him 7 SB titles to be the no doubter greatest of all time. Even after his 6th with the patriots it still wasn’t clear that he was the greatest. Because he played with the GOAT coach of all-time. Circumstances matter being numbers on the books.

To you? The only way it makes sense to you.

Are you forgetting the three or so years in the early teens when Stafford went full YOLO and essentially forgot how to play QB in a responsible, professional manner?

Matt is one of the three or so most talented throwers of the football that I’ve ever seen. He also played like shit for a couple years as a Detroit Lion and did so on some fairly talented teams.

I’m pretty sure I have said the entire way that this is how I view it. I’m not trying to convince anyone to change their minds. This entire thing has been IMO…

But people sure want to try change mine for some reason.

And Jared has played like shit in his entire post season career. When it matters most. Stafford has been a better QB in his playoff career than he has been in the regular season. This can’t be ignored but some choose to do so. One guy rises his game to the occasion and the other gets significantly worse…

My argument wasn’t all numbers based. I did mention that Jared throws a very accurate ball, he knows where to go with the ball, he doesn’t turn the ball over and he’s durable as hell. You went from waffling a little bit back-and-forth, which one was better, and now you definitively say that Stafford is better. What are you basing that on as it pertains to his time in Detroit?

I believe the large bias for Stafford and against Jared Goff is how both were treated by the Rams. Remember, Stafford wasn’t on anybody’s list of great quarterbacks until he left Detroit.

Stafford is really accurate too. This is such a false misconception because he has a lesser completion percentage. The biggest difference is, the types of throws these guys attempt. Stafford throws probably a 1/3rd of his passes into tight coverage or low percentage shots trying to give his players a chance to make a play. In fact you probably have to be more accurate when attempting the throws he does. Because the margin for error is razor thin. They are still dimes, they are just in highly contested situations. Jared plays it completely different.

I’ll say it, Jared might be more accurate, but its by the slimmest of margins. Their completion percentages are not a reflection of accuracy imo.

Again, I’m not knocking Stafford, because I think he’s a great quarterback. But part of being a great quarterback is throwing to guys who are open and not trying to jam it into tight places. I think Goff excels in this area which might be one of the reasons his completion rate is high and his turnovers are low. I also think Jared is knocked because he has zero wheels. I understand this to a point, but it could also be some of the reasons for his durability.

The comparison was as Lions QBs, right?

This was 100% where i was at.. as lions qbs Goff is definitely more successful, if you want to argue situations i can get on board. Hell i even agree i believe Stafford was better as a pure talent but he wasnt some hugely successful QB here in a way that Goff doesnt or cant be listed over him in the all time rankings.

To me this is evidence of a poorer decision-making process.
