You know they will use a ton of nil next year.
That is wild.
Hopefully stuff like this will kill the transfer portal. NIL = great. Transfer portal = ruining college sports.
Why?
Nil is why its a mess though
So Indiana is the season started have one kid on scholarship.
But that part is not going away. Not paying workers who make your company millions and millions of dollars just won’t fly.
But you can mitigate the impact by restricting transfers. You can’t have teams recruiting players from other teams, or agents going to other teams to find out who is willing to pay their clients the most. It’s fine to try to get the most money from the school you’ve already committed to, and if you need leverage in those negotiations, they can do what the pros do and sit out. Or they can still transfer, but make them sit out for a year like they used to.
I mean its a mix of both
Sure, but the NIL is going nowhere and in the big picture, I think it’s a good thing. If I was making millions of dollars for my boss, I’d want to be paid appropriately too.
But the transfer portal is making it the wild wild west. And it’s creating a caste system, definitely it benefits the richest of the rich.
You can really see it in the NCAA Tourney. And mid-major player with a whiff of talent has transferred “up”. The big upsets or small schools going far in the tourney will be a thing of the past.
Would you agree there needs to be a cap though? Top teams will spend and spend and hurts smaller schools
I mean it would be nice, but who would enforce it? The NCAA is a paper tiger.
It would also be nice if there was a cap in MLB and the foreign soccer leagues, but I don’t see that happening any time soon either.
The players have all the power in college sports that bring in lots of money. They haven’t always used that power. But they have it.
They could completely disassociate from college representation if they wanted. See Jr. Hockey in Canada for an example.
This has become officially dumb.
That’s what I’d like to know. This isn’t normal.
In my opinion all about IU’s coach quitting and new guy coming in, players don’t know what is going to happen. Do they fit in the new coach’s plans going forward? Now is the time to enter the portal and keep your options open, which, btw, includes returning to Indiana.
And of course, add in, all the other teams making contact through back channels that they have room and $$ for them to leave IU.
The new normal
Illinois player has entered his 4th. So i will be his 4th. New rules should you get one transfer for free. If you do it again you have to sit out a year
Agreed…
As currently constructed? Not so sure about that. The kids deserve some scratch but more structure is necessary IMO.
Seems like a problem that AI could solve easily. Audit the schools and all transactions and then dole out penalties or blocks, when needed.
