Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reports an NFC pass game coordinator said Florida QB Anthony Richardson’s accuracy is “scary.”
“The short accuracy is so scary. You’ve really got a project in him," the source told Breer. "And the accuracy, you can develop it, OK, but a guy who’s accurate is usually accurate coming out of high school and college, and he isn’t. Even Josh Allen, you look at him coming out of Wyoming, he had solid mechanics coming out, and he just had to tweak it. You watch it with this guy, and there are times when he fits it into tight windows, and maybe you can tap into that. But he’s a project. And the hit on it could be huge, because you don’t just find guys like this.” While Richardson struggled with short-area accuracy in Florida’s basic passing scheme, he was excellent on longer throws. His “big-time deep throw” rate in college – as measured by Pro Football Focus – was in line with Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud, and better than Justin Herbert and Deshaun Watson. Richardson completed 42 percent of his attempts of more than 20 yards in 2022, the 21st highest rate among all FBS quarterbacks. Whichever team takes Richardson, the most athletic QB in NFL history, will certainly work tirelessly to clean up his shorter throws.
If we happen to come out of draft night with Richardson, would he entice Ben Johnson to stay a little longer? Would be one hell of a feather in his cap if he was able to develop a young project QB like Richardson.
Good thing the Lions wouln’t have to play Richardson for a year or two and get him tightened up and squared away if they draft him. He could be in some trouble if he’s drafted by a team who will throw him to the wolves and start day one of first season.
Visions of AR15 airing it out to a streaking Jamo outrunning his coverage down the sideline.
I don’t think Ben Johnson would stay around for AR, but more likely bring Goff with him to his HC landing stop. I’d attach QB coach and the heir apparent OC Lions brought in this offseason to AR if he was drafted here.
He’s such a tough one. Virtually all of the internet scouts and TV personalities that have poured through the tape say the accuracy issues are overblown. If that’s true then it’s hard to see how he fails.
At the same time I’ve watched several games where he was really having trouble with bunnies.
The pocket movement is as special as the athleticism. As is the arm talent. I’m just really split on him and I imagine that is true of quite a few teams.
It could also be the opposite. Johnson has established himself with a pocket passer who has an established baseline level of consistent play. He’d be risking his stock unnecessarily to hang around for several years trying to develop a totally different type of QB. Its quite likely that he agreed to stay on the basis that he’d have the opportunity to build on what he’s already done with Goff, because if the choice was staying as OC and developing a guy that Brad and Dan pick, or becoming HC and developing a guy that he picks then there’s only one smart option there and it’s not staying in Detroit. This is one of the reasons I’m fairly confident we don’t take one of the hyped QBs in this draft, Johnson wouldn’t hang around for a project that’s not his own.
If Detroit took a qb…it would be for BJ, and it would keep him here a few more years. Just like AG was promised he would be getting his horses this offseason. The reason AG was never going to get fired bc people in the building that knew they were asking him to coach up a defense with one hand tied behind his back. In order to see what they had in Goff they needed to focus on the offense first. Bj 100% would want the resume booster of being the guy who created the “next Herbert”. I believe it would be stroud. BUUUUUT…if the lions are taking a qb early…then they took at class at Langley, bc there is nothing out there…rivals in the NFC are thinking its possible…but that has more to do with the national perception that “Goff can’t possibly be the guy”.
This will be a hugely underrated post until it comes true!
Philly had the league record for sacks…. Just gave Hurts 255M… Hurts arguably has the 1st - 3rd set of weapons in the NFL…
Buffalo gave J Allen 258M over 6 yrs… he had by far the leagues best defense allowing just 16.9….
DET hung tough with both and did so with an epically bad D…
Goff had 11 TDs with 2 ints and a winning record the 2nd half of 2021 (once Lynn was grounded)….
I’m not hating on Ben, but we sure give a lot of credit to a first year play caller who admittedly collaborated with a QB who played well with DC calling plays, and had led the leagues highest scoring offense under McVay from 17-18’ (not a small sample size). Add that to breaking records at Cal….
If Zach Wilson was our QB last year we’d have been 3-14 at best……
Ben Johnson is secretly hoping we draft QB high so he can pry Goff out of here when he takes a HC gig next year.
Some of this DC and Holmes love has gotten out of control……
Mark my words the honeymoon ends in by week 4 of 2023…. One way or the other. If we are 3-1 and rolling we will be ready for the marriage… if we are 2-2 or gulp 1-3 anxiety will deservedly set in…
DJ Chark left for cheap… Duce and others left…. Swagger left for cheaper than expected. We clearly gave up on Okudah, but is an injured Moseley much better?

A definite upgrade, but not a massive one…. Especially since 4 of the 6 additions are 1 yr guys.
When you consider we had the #9 cap room it’s fairly modest overall.
Wasting a top 10 pick on a project QB says we are good enough right now to win the division.
That’s the hardest I’ve laughed at one of my own jokes in quite awhile…then you amplified it. HAHAHAHAH!
I really do think Brad & Dan are the best GM/HC combo there is, & I stand behind that…especially with Dan.
I can see how ppl could disagree &/or want to reserve judgment though.
