So i went through and took each teams DVOA, EPA and Success% for offense and defense. Put them into a scale -10 to 10. Where 0 is average and the tens are best and worst.
Averaged those for offense and defense and plotted them out. Heres the data
I want to see this graph in motion (an 8-frame gif) game-by-game. Then we can see which direction they’re heading, as well as how well they’ve done so far.
It’s strange how this graph makes ATL, JAX, CAR, HOU, and MIN look better than or equivalent to BUF, PHI, TB, and SF. Which makes me wonder if offense is more important than defense.
Take, for example, the Colts. Best record in the league. By far the best offense per the grid, but only an average defense. I think Buffalo gets more out of their offense than Houston gets out of its defense when it comes to winning games.
I think the tricky part to figure in is quality of opponent. Remember, even though both teams are playing the same divisions, the Packers are playing a 3rd place schedule and the Lions are playing a 1st place schedule.
For common opponents, the Lions beat the Browns while GB lost. Both teams beat the Bengals, the Lions did better but also played Browning. GB played a straight off the plane Joe Flacco. That’s all we got so far.
The Packers second half of their schedule is much harder in terms of defense. Thanks to them playing a 3rd place schedule, they got @Denver too. No way am I volunteering to play that defense!
They look like easily the best AFC team to me, yeah. Buffalo can’t be trusted (lost to NE at home and Atlanta? Really?). The Ravens have all sorts of health issues and while I expect them to win the AFCN, they’ll have to go @ Buffalo and @ KC to reach the Super Bowl, and I find that highly unlikely. The Bengals will be lucky to make it.
The Colts look like the next best team, and sorry I can’t take Daniel Jones over Pat, for as much as I’d like for it to happen. Also Indy’s defense is pretty crappy, they’ve benefitted from a pretty easy schedule. Not saying they aren’t good, just not #1 overall AFC Super Bowl good.
Denver can beat the Chiefs on their day, but they can also lose at home to the Giants.
I think this is the best version of the Chiefs we’ve seen in 3 years.
I just don’t trust their OL, though it’s a lot better with Alt back. But I can’t get their games against the Giants and Commanders out of my head. Washington ran them out of their own building.
Thankfully the favored matchup at this point has only hit once ever, I think. Last year after week 8 it was Lions-Chiefs
We all know GB is a sham choke-artist team, even if they get the #1 seed. I would be stunned if they made the Super Bowl. Us, Philly, LAR… it’ll be one of those teams. Maybe SF too, but with their injuries I doubt it.
