NFL's own analytics data rates Lions draft #1

Thought this was interesting considering how analytics guys were throwing fits with each pick.

This kind of information is not going to be received well by some.

Most of the guys critical here were so because of positional value. The NGS score, to my knowledge, doesn’t factor that one way or another.

The NGS score factors in traditional production (tackles, catches, etc) plus tracking data like in-game speed.

Thanks for posting this Gregg. Great to see!

So first thought was, I bet Hooker pushed us up a bit.
2nd thought, and Seattle’s monster draft not on the list? Yeah, JSN being injured and all.

Because it’s not based on someone’s forearm size.

It’s interesting to see all the 9 point something RASers being signed as UDFAs.

Production > measurables.

If I was a 3rd world dictator I’d mandate all analytic guys be rounded up and shot with a high velocity 30mm AA cannon (just to one up PRNK)

Just using my raw thoughts thru the process and applying them to Seattle’s draft, I end up with this:

Witherspoon - A physically limited corner who is feisty. Good 2nd or 3rd round pick. Not a guy you want matched up one on one with the leagues best receivers. He’s a great guy to have on the other receiver.

The Enigma - I realize he was pushed up because this was a weak WR class at the top. But let’s not forget that his comp his Sun God, who went in the 4th round. Amon-Ra went lower than he should have but even in the best of times he’s probably not a 1st round pick.

Zach Charbonet - This was my favorite player to throw ice cold water on. I called him Jordan Howard. He belongs in the NFL and if you feed him he will eat. But Howard went in the 5th round.

That’s 3 of the first 4 picks.

Jim Shortz evaluated players based on how much the players highlights added to his forearm size.

This raises a REALLY good point.

People like me are upset because of the perception that we could have done better. But in reality, we VERY likely got:

  1. Four very good starters (Gibbs, Campbell, Branch, and LaPorta)
  2. Two solid rotational guys (DT Martin and OG Sorsdal)
  3. One QB of the future or solid backup

If we had landed perceived stars like Will Anderson or Jalen Carter (both arguably #1 talents in the draft) then the disappointment goes Waaaay down.

But again, fact is:

  1. HOU outbid everyone on Anderson with 2 firsts, a 3rd and a 4th for a kid who has never played a pro snap. And NINE teams didn’t think Carter was worth drafting - including the two worst defenses in the league (DET & CHI).

  2. The other guys drafted before our pick at 12 were 3 OTs (which we don’t need that high) and Tyree Wilson (who would have been a much bigger reach than Gibbs). So, maybe we COULDN’T have drafted better.

We had another very productive draft when I wanted a KILLER draft. Feeling better about it…

Great way to look at it.

2003 wasn’t a great draft by the way.

So basically, there might actually be some hard data out there… that Brad Holmes is actually a bigger villain than some on this board continue to think? Brad Holmes is drafting SO well that it takes the national NFL community a few days to catch up with his brilliance?

And it’s not just the glare from his handsome skull! It’s the simple fact that brilliant people don’t have room in their craniums for hair follicles! Waiting for the rest of humanity to catch up with bald humanity is occasionally trying my patience.

I’m good with it, all of the good players they have given pretty high scores. Likewise I assume they aren’t very high on B Martin just like I am, hence why he didn’t make the list!

Damn. That hurt! I’m an analytics guy some of the time for sure. Shot thru the heart.
