Wasn’t there a thread recently when Gibbs was running good with Knuckles out reaffirming how easy the decision was to pass on Carter? Yet, now, no mention at all when Carter becomes a SB chmp in his 2nd year and more importantly, had a HUGE ROLE in that SB run. Eagles didn’t blitz once. I just thought it was a bit strange to see not one mention of Carter being a SB champ in his 2nd year.
I always said we could have gotten Carter and traded up and still got Gibbs or Laporta. We had the pick we used on B Martin who has not even contributed yet even with all the injuries. We could have used that pick and maybe packaged another with it to get high enough to still get Gibbs.
Anyway, I would LOVE to have had Carter on this team last year as much as I am sure the Eagles are happy as hell we passed on him so they could grab him.
Passing on Carter was a (redacted) no doubt. But Gibbs is a freak too. Holmes can still attack this DL this offseason like he has CB in years past and all will be well. Gibbs is Jamaal Charles. Not as positional valuable but my god am I glad we have him.
Turd, or UNBLOCKABLE 2nd YEAR SB CHAMP? I know which one he is because he was a MASSIVE MASSIOVE part of that awesome Dline. If an unblockable 2nd year SB champ stud on the DL is a turd, I LIKE SHIT!!
Yep, and they WERE WRONG on that one. We saw the payoff the Eagles got last night. I love Brad and he has had great drafts, he’s allowed to miss on one every now and then. This one was a big one, a really big one, an unblockable one.
I have moved on for the most part. He would have never fit the Lions culture. But it can also be true that he might end up being a HOF (although I doubt it unless he gets way more motivated) he can play but can he grind out 10+ years? Of course if he does that will make many “grab back at him”…
Also it is hard to be upset when looking at the overall roster of the Lions. What has happened is almost impossible.
We keep going over this but you have to go back over the last 59 years and find a hand full of teams that have drafted this well in a 4 year stretch. It is almost impossible to do what has been done.
Yes I live me some Carter. But it is hard to hate on the Gibbs/Branch/LaPorta/Campbell haul. All dudes that clearly fit the Lions culture and can also play. And right now at least Gibbs and Branch have HOF potential for sure. That is not an easy thing to pull off.
You don’t get a shot at a Jalen Carter too often. Such a physical specimen. Constant double teams and he swats them aside with his absurd strength and power. He’s good.
Sorry, but two things can be true at the same time. It was a flat out mistake not to draft Carter. I just said above that Brad has done great and is allowed to miss here and there, but no reason to PRETEND he didn’t make a bad decision there, especially when he covered for it by drafting B Martin.
Of course it was a risk, but we now know it was a risk worth taking and we saw the payoff of that risk last night in front of the world. Where did you get that no opinion about drafting can be right unless you are a GM?" So you don’t know that passing on Michael Jordan 1st overall was a mistake unless you are a GM? WHAT???
And if the Lions don’t get hit with a plague, we laugh the Eagles out of Ford Field before curb stomping the Chiefs worse than Philly did. Nothing Jail-in Carter does changes any of that.
We can play the “What if” game all day, but mine is better than yours.
Well, it depends. When things are going right, he’s great. But when things are going wrong - like they did last year - he disappears. So you have to spend effort to keep him happy and focused, and our FO wants self-starters and guys who have to be pulled back from working too hards. It’s just a different approach.
But I’m telling you, the next Jalen Carter can come around and we won’t touch him either. So I wouldn’t say we were wrong exactly.
He doesn’t fit our culture. It didn’t make sense then, and it doesn’t make sense now. If it worked out great for Philly, great, good for them. But he didn’t win them the Super Bowl, either.
Nice thoughts, but we have no way of knowing that. Again, Brad has done great, but passing on Carter was a HUGE error, and we saw how big it was last night. We still could have gotten Gibbs and one of Camble or LaPorta. We had the 4rd round Martin pick to deal, we could have added a pick maybe from this year and maybe a player or two as well. WEe will never know what Brad might have been able to do had he taken Carter, but he certainly had NFL draft currency to work with to move up again.
Anyway, it was an obvious mistake to pass on a massive talent like that no doubt, That doesn’t mean Brad has not been GREAT with our drafts, certainly the best GM we have ever had. I made a recent post saying we are right on schedule, that we were actually a year early compared to most predictions of the rebuild and we are sitting in perfect shape for the next few seasons to win the SB. but, we will have to go through Carter instead of having him teamed up with Alim, Reader, and Hutch.
