As others have said, ready-to-practice-fully and ready-to-be-better-than-the-alternative are two very different things. It’s not REALLY so shocking that a guy who broke his ankle and relies on ankle flexibility for his pass-rushing effectiveness isn’t ready to offer much, not even as much as the much-maligned Charles Harris.
He’s evidently not fully healthy, if he was he wouldn’t be getting ruled out two days before the game. Full practice doesn’t mean full health. The window was presumably opened because the injury has healed, but he might not have full mobility or strength back yet, and practicing is a way to test that. If he didn’t have burst or his ability to get really low then he’s not much use out there.
With Jacobs going on IR there is an open roster spot that Houston could take, so unless there’s something nefarious going on it’s a simple case of Houston being unable to go at the level required for a playoff game.
Eh, I’ve been saying for weeks that Houston is likely done for the year for the reasons a few have already mentioned in this thread.
The bigger story to me is Mitchell being out. Even if LaPorta plays, he’s likely to be far from 100% and with Wright also nicked up, it’s a bit mind boggling that the Lions didn’t try to sign a TE in an offense where TE is so key. Maybe LaPorta is closer to 100% than I think but that would be surprising/shocking.
I can’t think of a more bendy ankle than a broken one. Just saying.
While he was listed as “out,” I do not think this is the final designation. Dan said something along the lines of “let’s see how he feels tomorrow, that’s important” in his press conference. Maybe I am wrong and today’s designations are legally binding.
His repair was actually done above the ankle….
and involved the syndesmosis joint between the tibia and fibula.
The fracture was to his fibula, and was fixed with a plate, screws, and the “tightrope” implant used to fix some high ankle sprains (Brock Bowers, Tua, Pollard, Hurts all had tightrope procedure ). This area of the lower leg doesn’t have much impact on ankle flexion.
I also think it is worth noting that he was able to get under OTs in part because he is significantly shorter than them.
He has natural leverage at 6’0” tall… and has freakishly long arms at 34.5 inches.
Considering AG had Houston playing in the 2nd half of preseason games and had changed his position this year, I’m not convinced he has much of any chance of getting put on the active roster at his original position at this time.
