One hot take: Lions lost Stafford trade

I can’t argue with some of the points made.

That was a culture changing trade, that netted us multiple superstars. Ultimately the Rams have won a title, and we haven’t. I also agree with his take on Goff. I admitted in the game thread last weekend that I’m starting to buy into the “Can’t win it all with Goff” that I used to think people were crazy for. Goff is very good when everything around him is perfect. Unfortunately with his contract, it makes that part hard. He has definite limitations. I love Goff. I hope I’m wrong. But I’ve definitely lost faith in him.

I will save this. You’re not gonna win the Super Bowl if you’re counting on Goff. But the lions defense needs to be the difference. I’ve said this all along. You can’t count on an offense to carry you through tough times. The defense is what did them in last year but the defense can also help carry them this year and that’s what needs to happen

I also love Goff and what he’s done for Detroit. It was always assumed he was part of the deal to clear cap Space and we were paid to take him on.

Couple things:

  • Lions may not be nearly as good a roster now if trade doesn’t go down.

  • Stafford WANTED out which breaks my heart

  • Goff has definitely been a better QB in Detroit but will have this narrative until he wins it all and dispels it.

  • I do 100% agree that it’s a QB League and If you don’t have one, everything you do not trying to find one is wasted.

  • Goff needs to play better in big moments

Not convinced it can’t be won with him and hoping he shows that this year.

How is this even a “thing?” Stafford was completely DONE with Detroit. He forced his way out. The new staff thought they were signing on for a team with Matt Stafford. They made the most of the reality of the situation.

This was an abysmal, poorly written article with silly takes like “Here’s the problem: I was under the impression that trading Stafford would start the rebuild, which would include finding an elite quarterback not named Jared Goff, who is not an elite quarterback.”

A) Goff is an elite QB.

B) I was under zero illusion that the Lions were going to come away with a Josh Allen. And I’ve been FLOORED that Goff has become what he’s become: which is elite.

Trash, clickbait article.

Let me step in and say something funny about the Josh Allen reference.

Yes, the Bills found their Josh Allen. But they literally traded away the pick to the Chiefs that became Patrick Mahomes. You could make a case that the team with Josh Allen lost the trade with the Chiefs.

Well, Goff hasn’t won the trade, yet. That much is for sure. Wishy washy fans cheer his name at hockey games and concerts, then, become so accustomed to winning because of Goff (partially), that they blame him for a beat up Oline.

Clue, Matt Stafford couldn’t win here because of a bad Oline.

Damn the facts. Goff is a loser!

When are we going to be able to hide/mute threads without clicking into them?

All I know, is that Josh Allen is looking pretty Jared Goffish tonight. It’s almost like not playing behind a beat up offensive line is important for all quarterbacks.

Wwl we had Stafford for 10 years and never won anything and he believed we never would. And nobody can say we would have going forward. Matt wasn’t consider an elite qb then either and people said you couldn’t win with him as well. He was padstatford and nothing more to many folks. Since the trade Detroit has won the NFCN back to back, won 2 playoff games and had their best franchise season record ever at 15-2. How is that a lose? No we haven’t won the big prize yet, but the article is BS. We are in contention and will be for a long time. Man, so much better than living in the cellar for years on end. I guess a band wagon fan might not understand that.

Lions didn’t lose the trade…

Rams were a Superbowl team before Stafford. Ala 2018. The trade absolutely benefited them.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth for Lions fans. As great as Holmes and MCDC are and have been. Snead and McVay are just different animals. Lions have come a real LONG way in this new era. But the Rams are next level along with Philly and KC. Everything these teams do is just better than what everyone else doing. From coaching to team building.

that is such bullshit !! my God, look at the revolving door of OC’s, Gm’s, HC’s, DC’s, NONE of them knew how to make the team go-couldn’t run it, had no idea what they were doing, and the team lost and lost, meanwhile Stafford was getting beat to a pulp behind the O-lines(plural). His entire career as a Lion-He knew DAMN well, there was no winning to be done in Detroit and HE wanted to win elsewhere. Detroit was ran by clowns and winning nothing!! yet it’s fun to blame Stafford for NOT wanting to stay?? Um no, Matt left to try and save his career in the NFL….WE didn’t do SHIT until Sheila Hemp Ford took over (this ERA) so save the BS, that Stafford just “wanted” to quit on us.

Until the Lions win a Super Bowl, the narrative will be the Lions lost this trade. Rams were a good team and added Stafford and a few more pieces and won the Super Bowl.

The trade completely changed the trajectory of the Lions franchise.

I get many people think things like this is a zero sum game—there can only be one winner. If that’s the case, I’m ok with “losing” this trade.

Yes this trade is a win for both teams. The Lions wouldn’t have been able to put a good enough team around Stafford to compete for a SB. So they got assets and nailed those picks building a very good foundation.

It’s rare but sometimes both teams win in a trade and this is one of those rare cases.

Stafford asked for a trade. It’s that simple lol. He played his ass off for the organization no one is saying he didn’t. But he did force his way out.

The stupidity of the idea that Goff isn’t good enough to win it all with baffles me. I would find it comical if not for the fact people actually believe it. This BS line that “elite QBs can win anywhere” is just that BS. Lamar Jackson is considered “elite” yet he hasn’t won anything and the Ravens have tried to stack pieces around him. Mahomes is “elite” yet when his OLine plays like shit he falls completely apart. Josh Allen is “elite” too and what has he won? In every case a QB needs other pieces to be be successful. Goff can’t win if the defense can’t stop people from scoring, and he can’t win if the OLine can’t keep people out of his face. That’s not him not being good enough that the reality of any QB. Tom Brady took the Patriots to a near perfect season (I think he was considered elite) but got beat by the Giants because his OLine got destroyed in that SB. He sure didn’t “elevate” anyone. He consistently struggled with pressure up the middle, kinda like Goff is getting. Lazy people that want a quick fix bitch about the qb. Goff is more than good enough. The oline needs to step up. Ya’ll hated Stafford and now you want him back. Y’all some fickle ass people.

Without reading the article I will note that I am amazed Matt had as been healthy this long for the Rams. He missed a lot of games in 2022 but has been mostly healthy since and that amazes me.

No way did I think Matt would last five more seasons after we traded him. No way. Yet, he has. Credit Matt for being a warrior.

Jaquiski Tartt catches the ball that Stafford hit him in the chest with, and we probably aren’t having this conversation.

Sometimes trades are good for both teams, the Stafford trade was what I call a good trade, both teams got better from that trade and got closer to there goals. It was a win for both teams.
