I see that Gretzky is there. Did he go down to the ice to congratulate Ovechkin?

Glad he did it on such a cool shot too, not just a rebound.

What a class act move by him to have followed Ovi around for the last several games to congratulate him. I guess he does what he did the last game when he tied it, congratulates him in the locker room

Insane, if he didn’t break his leg this season, would have paced for 50 plus goals

Yeah, the NHL stopped the game and had a full out ceremony. Gretzky was part of it and gave a speech as well, all while wearing a Gordie Howe pin.

Only 60+ empty net goals in that count (saw some complaints on this l but not his fault of course).

It is impressive.

First thing I noticed when Gretzky was on camera… Class guy… Hockey players are the best athletes

Gretz is a massive Gordie fan. That was his favorite player as a kid.

Congrats to Ovie. I seldom watch hockey anymore but his longevity is really impressive. That he’s pushing 40 and still an elite goal scorer. That’s what will break records.

They did it in the same amount of games… That’s friggen insane… What’s even more insane is Gretzky has 2.5 times as many assists in the same amount of time… The Great One Lives

Gretz had a pretty nasty falloff to his game curtesy of a cheap shot by Gary Suter. Suter was also the guy who messed up Paul Kariya’s career with a cheap shot. F*** Suter.

Gretzky changed the game, was the first to start playing behind the net effectively seeing the ice better than anyone before him. McDavid is just as special, but in a completely different way.

So fun to watch

Ovie was such an unlikeable player in his early years. He was an arrogant prick. He turned into a tremendous leader and is a great guy. You can tell how much the guys love him. Gretzky is also all class. He was in the Washington room last game when Ovechkin tied the record and made sure to shake Ryan Leonard’s hand and congratulate him in front of the entire team for scoring his first career goal.

Hockey players are by far the classiest of all pro sports.

Gretzky’s wife also carried forward a tradition, giving an undisclosed gift to Ovie’s wife. She had received one from Mrs. Gordie Howe when Gretzky got #802.

For those who consider other " major leagues" added in

Gordie 975 with WHA
Ovie 952 with Russia
Gretzky 941 with WHA
Jagr 873 with Russia, more if you count his 3 yrs with the Czech league

Datsyuk 440 with Russia
Federov 546 with Russia
Pavel Bure 509 with Russia

Baseball went through this with Negro League stats, just a couple years ago making all of them official. So now Cobb doesnt have the highest lifetime batting average etc…

Western League I think is as well ( pre 1900) But the biggest is Ichiro…he is the all time hit king if you count NBL hits from Japan.

To which Pete Rise said, " Then you have to count my minor league nunbers!"

Always something to debate…

Jagr was still smoking cigarettes and playing hockey this year at age 53. Dude is unreal. He still plays in the Pro Czech league. Think he’s close to 1000 goals.
