I don’t love Brandon Staley. Well I do love that he’s employed bc it’s entertaining as hell but aside from that I’m not a fan of his coaching. But this is not going for it on your own 22. This is at the 8 and the 3 with 3 yards to go in each case. I can guarantee you that the analytics would suggest that Lanning made the correct call. Whether the analytics should be trusted or not? Also, important to note that he was up against arguably one of the five best college offenses of the last five years. He thought settling for field goals was a losing strategy. Hardly an illogical stance.
I’m not even defending the decisions. I’m just suggesting that it’s a wee bit asinine to imply that had Oregon taken a field goal with 55 seconds before half and/or 7:01 left in the 3rd quarter that surely the game would have proceeded identically. That’s generally not how realities work. Action leads to reaction.
I think they are both #2’s in a usual draft but are 2-7 in this one. Tells you how good the WR’s are. Franklins catch was the highlight of the day though, getting the elbow down was an NFL first down on a mediocre ball. I think both QB’s helped themselves. Penix took hits he hasn’t since Indiana and he stood in. Nix went 33/44 and his completion % dropped?!?
The other question for their OC is that both their TE’s were obviously a huge issue for Washington but they didn’t go there more. Herbert’s brother there was a problem and the better one that faked the injury was a bigger problem. Fail there. Both those two are NFL guys though. I always thought Herbert could be an NFL TE and his brother seems to be proving it.
Crazy how it plays out. If they get it, they are geniuses.
If you don’t. And you lose by a FG…
Well, that’s the game we play!
I remember Mahomes playing Cincy the year Cincy went to SB and just before half he made a crucial error and they didn’t get points. I think KC was up 21-3 at that time.
That has stuck with me ever since.
Take the pts before half and go regroup. Get the ball 2nd half
