PFF Ranks all QBs heading into 2021 season

Excerpt below. Even PFF says he is a top 5 QB in a clean pocket. Struggled with the deep ball last season (no deep WRs for the rams). When I look at the list, I’d take Goff over most of the guys on that list ranked above him.

I see him as better than:
Prescott, Mayfield, Tannehill, Carr, Cousins, Murray, Fitzbatrick, Jones, Garoppolo, Wentz, Winston/Hill,

I’d keep him over:
Brady (age), Ryan (age), Roethlisberger (age), Watson (off-field issues).

26. JARED GOFF, DETROIT LIONS

A fresh start does players wonders, especially at the quarterback position. It also doesn’t hurt when you get a vote of confidence and your team takes Penei Sewell to protect you over some highly sought-after first-round quarterbacks. The Rams were third in the league in play-action pass attempts and tied for fifth in screen pass attempts. It will be imperative that the Lions help their QB and design an offense around what he’s comfortable with. Goff has a top-five passing grade when he has a clean pocket, is in rhythm and targets intermediate throws 10-19 yards downfield. He struggled when targeting 20-plus yard throws in the same scenario, earning the 29th-ranked passing grade out of 36 qualifying quarterbacks.

Getting the ball downfield in 2020 was a struggle, whether it was missed throws or negatively graded throws. This is probably why Goff led the league in passing yards on completions of 5 yards or less a season ago. The Lions seem to be building around Goff, and this is exactly what he needs to get his confidence back up so he can play at a high level again.

What I want to know is how much Stafford ranking would change if he was still on the lions and Goff still on the Rams… curious as to where they ranked in previous years

Good question! PFF breaks down play by play and scores it and so this is pretty specific to just the last 16 games. It may not have changed at all. Would be interesting to look back at the 2019 one if we can find it.

I’m surprised he’s not ranked lower. Everyone knows that every positive throw is due to McVay, but every bad one is all on him.

Here is the 2019. Goff ranked 13 and Stafford 15.

So it looks like they have Goff and Stafford pretty close except for the rankings going into Super Bowl LIV, where they have Stafford considerably ahead of Goff

Haha we were putting together the same post at the same time!

How is he ranked below 2 rookie QB’s that haven’t even stepped on a football field yet?

Rather than trying to fit Goff into McVay’s “system,” I think it’s more a matter of Anthony Lynn designing the offense around Goff and the talent at hand. If Williams, Perriman, and St. Brown can stay healthy, the passing game should be ok.

Right? They preface the article with “analyzing every play and projecting future performance” yet the rookies have no pro experience so how do you correlate college stats with pro performance?

Whatever, it’s an off-season ranking which we’ll have a million more of before September.

All we gotta worry about is going out kicking some teeth in and winning some games

I mean, Justin Fields is just better than him. Come on now.

Oh wait, I can’t say that anymore can I because he’s with the Bears right? Crap.

Yea, you’re in a tight spot. Can’t root for him to be too good because he’s with the Bears; and if he is garbage, we’ll all pile on you with the ‘told you Ohio State QB’s are garbage in the NFL’ :grinning:

This is laughable. Am I taking Ryan Tannehill @ #12? Oh hell no. Derek Carr @#13? The only two guys I MIGHT take over Goff are Murray and Herbert. Am I taking Cousins over Goff? Hell no. Burrow over Goff? Why? He played ovay as a rookie in ten games but his rating was just under 90 so solid but not awesome. I thought Justin was a better QB overall in 2020.

Ryan F. @ #19? Honestly, over Goff? That seems laughable for sure. Daniel Jones…really? With his 80.4 rating in 2020 in his second season? Jimmy G. who is likely not even going to finish the season for the 49ers!!! J, Winston who was amazing as the Bucs starter right? Who had a coach who won a ring now too.

This doesn’t pass the smell test to me at all. I think 15ish is reasonable but Ryan F. that far over Goff? That is just ficking stupid.

The problem is Goff was bad before McVay, had success with McVay but then started to struggle the last two years and McVay shipped him out for an upgrade that makes them “contenders” in their minds. The general public will view it as McVay made Goff and until he can do it without McVay, they will be right.

Goff played in seven games as a rookie. And nope, he didn’t play well. A rating of 63.6. Yikes.

But that is a better QB rating that Stafford as a rookie who had a 61 rating. Other QBs have struggled as rookies too. Drew Brees had a 76.9 rating his first year of starting (his second NFL season). Better but he followed that up with a 67.5 rating. Not very good to go down in rating in your third season.

My point is the NFL as a general statement has fully bought into the Stafford amazing, Goff awful, McVay brilliant, Goff holding him back narrative. Honestly, Ryan F. over Goff? Two or three rookies ranked ahead of Goff?

I love it though. Bring on this negative shit. Bring it on. Stafford gets a total free pass for his time here because, well, the Lions (yep, a big chink of that is true) but Goff is being treated like a waste of a roster space. Jimmy G. above him after drafting Lance? Really? Eye roll for sure.

I am mostly fine with the top 11. But after that he ranking feels wrong to me. Big Ben looked totally done. Honest questions about his arm talent at this point. I am fine with Derek Carr ahead of Goff. But Daniel Jones? Jameis? Really!!! Hell, they had to put BOTH Saints QBs there as they don’t know who will start or what rolle they will play but hell, both of 'em are also better than Goff so who cares!

Yes to all of this.

Exactly my thoughts too, bro. As long as someone is in Motown, they’ll have extra proving to do. Screw the media. Hope the players are aware enough to ignore and/or let it fuel them.

I can’t argue with this comment.

Wouldn’t count Goff’s first 1/2 season at all. That was a dumpster fire “high school” offense that Case Keenum couldn’t do anything with either and then led the Vikings to the NFC divisional a year later.

Can’t wait to see what Goff can do out from under the McVay thumb.

That’s not what they are doing with this list. This is a list like any other source would put out with their opinion, but they throw in some of their data to meet however they feel about the QB. The list would be in a different order if the last 16 games were gospel.

The problem is people DO count that first year. It was a historically bad first impression and it absolutely impacts how people view him. Personally, I am hoping the guy finds success here, more because I don’t want to waste a high pick on a qb. I think you can win with Goff as long as you have a strong team around him and that is what I am hoping Holmes and Campbell do here.
