The wings deserved to be booed loudly off the ice. And seeing them all crying on the bench and all dejected when they did this all to themselves, again. They need some serious change.
Yeah its inevitable that changes have to happen this offseason
Larkin might be gone, hes a great scorer but god damn, as the leader of this team he does not deserve that stripe rn, team plays with no fire, no urgency, it feels like they dont actually care about winning and thats reflected from him.
Yzerman… hes gone, or there is one year left, that trade to St. Louis is a massive backfire now, have them a lottery pick… could very much be the straw that breaks the camels back with his time here, 10 year drought. Honestly if anything is a damning indictment, look at Montreal, they were ass for a shorter period of time then the Red Wings, yet they made the playoffs now again more recently then them.
not much else to say, offseason is gonna be ugly i think, team will be facing a big roadblock with what to do with the Yzerplan
How exactly does ANOTHER lottery pick fix any of the problems this team has?
Justin Faulk was a good player for us this year, and he will likely be a good player for us next season as well. I don’t know how getting another guy that’s another five years away from being a possible NHL contributor is worth anything to this franchise at the moment.
I think its less the pick being a lottery pick now, and more the downsides that the team was just not ready to be a playoff team… which again, indictment on Yzerman and Davicus said it to, felt like spending to spend. Faulk was solid… but when you spend the capital like that you need to see the return from it, and the team did not, and is feeling that now. We dont even know if Faulk is coming back either too after next seasons finished.
Honestly though, my issue isnt the pick at the end of the day and the trade, its that Yzerman has been given sufficent time to build up this team. Yes, he inherited one of the shitest situations in sports, and hes done a very solid job in building this team back up now… but it feels like the past two to three years the team is just stagnating, some of it falls on the players (Larkin…) but some of it also is on Yzerman and his spending sprees resulting in mediocre outcomes.
Maybe that is one of those things where hes actually doing what people want but its just back firing or not the right moves idk, but the team is hitting a wall at this point, and a decent chunk of that blame is in his hands.
Though, i dont even know if he will get fired tbh or “Promoted”, its hard to say rn, but at the very least next year is his last likely if they burn out again.
You laid it out well and I agree. They are in a tough spot - not good enough to make the playoffs and still a few good players away with no real great way to get those players, or they tear it down but what’s really there to tear down?
You trade Larkin, let Kane go, and now all of a sudden who’s replacing their points in the lineup? What could we actually get for Larkin?
I have wanted Larkin gone for a few seasons now, but also have to acknowledge that would potentially create a hole that hurts worse because of how bad the team is overall. I never liked Kane either but again, he was one of our best players the last couple years (not so much this year though).
The young guys haven’t stepped up or aren’t given the chance to, and we have a team full of 3rd and 4th liners, Seider and Debrincat and maybe Raymond. So we’d be right back to pretty much when Yzerman got here. Which even now we kind of are anyway. How far have we really come ( I know we were historically bad in 2020 I think it was, so there’s been some progress but still).
I dunno, just thinking out loud but I feel like they might be in an uncomfortable position where the path they take moving forward is essentially maintaining the status quo and hoping another young guy or two develop. That is pretty bleak
Larkin is talented, but if Compher is getting more points on the 5v5 then Larkin… thats a massive issue. Idk what to do with him, i dont think he should have the C going forward though, he has lost it imo, espeically as a leader, team is soft under him and it shows.
Kane and everyone else i keep, but the hole is dug a bit with Gibson and Faulk trades. Red Wings might just have to throw everything to overpay for guys but thats the spot they may be at (We need a legit 2C so badly).
its hard to say, and again, question remains, does Yzerman deserve another year or not… and i dont know at the end if he does.
