Red Wings Off-Season Thread

Envoie la sauce Montreal

Wings were/are my favorite NHL team of my youth….Hopped on the Grand River bus to the Olympia to see all of the Original 6 teams. Wings consistently played Away at nite on Saturdays and Home on Sunday nite at 7:00 P.M., often against the Canadiens, the Premier NHL Team of the 60’s. Nearly, all of the Montreal Canadien’s team in those days are in the Hall of Fame, owing primarily, to a NHL Rule, whereby Montreal had 1st Choice on ALL of the Quebec Junior players. Quebec Province was a Powerhouse for Hockey in those days. I have a Montreal jersey from my youth and loved watching them play against the Wings.

Saturday nite was reserved for WKBD-TV or CKLW-TV from Toronto, which Detroit got the Toronto TV Feed. Last time Toronto won the Cup was 1967, and often had Detroit’s number with Johnny Bower in Goal during the playoffs. Toronto got a lot of the Ontario Province players, and the US Teams were consigned to the Western Canadien Provinces and Newfoundland/Nova Scotia Maritime Provinces.

Played in Sudbury, Ontario sometimes against Ontario 16-18 year olds. They were Fast and Big….Zamboni machine was towed by a Horse, no lie. Chatted with Gretzky, protected by Dave ā€œCementheadā€ Semenko, Oiler Enforcer Defenseman in Manhattan Beach for 20 minutes, talking hockey, when he was still with the Oilers at CJ Brett’s Sports Bar one March Sat afternoon, while he was in town to play the Kings later that nite. Great Thrill !!

That is an awesome story, thank you for sharing!

I’m definitely pulling for Montreal, and they did exactly what they needed to do last night - get an early jump on a team who looked like they were off 11 days, on their home ice nonetheless.

We’ll see how it plays out, I could’ve been wrong about Carolina being better overall and maybe Montreal matches up well with them. But just game 1.

This is anecdotal but I feel like too much rest is rarely a good thing in any sport come playoff time.

Montreal really embracing the less is more philosophy with their shots to goals ratio

Also Lane Hutson is a phenomenal player and he barely comes off the ice - easily becoming my favorite player to watch in the entire league

That goal by Ehlers was dope.

Vegas is now up 3 games to zero over Colorado

Also down 3-0 last night only to win 5-3. Don’t think anyone predicted this. I know I didn’t. Also, how are leaf fans / media feeling about Marner now. Might be MVP of playoffs.

Makar missed first 2 games and didn’t look quite right last night.

Then MacKinnon got hurt in 2nd period after the game got tied up, and it was over for Colorado.

It’s amazing how bad their offense struggled without the top 2 studs playing at their normal level.

I mean they don’t have a problem going toe to toe with Montreal, so they have to be close

Carolina 3 Montreal 2 in OT

Habs were outshot 13-1 in the 3rd and OT combined. They also had a goal called back for offside.

This playoff sucks. I hate the way Carolina plays hockey. Lots of low probability shots on goal. It’s boring.

Good call on the challenge though. Rules are rules and I think a lot of coaches miss that challenge. Series changing challenge.

Especially cause the goal happened a fair bit after the offsides. That one hurt. They played hockey for like another 30 seconds after the offsides before the goal.. It was the right call for sure and a great challenge.

I’m getting a good chuckle out of the Red Wings offseason thread being about all the teams still in the playoffs. Seems right on point.

lol, good point!

So what do you think, should they trade Cossa this off-season?

Sure, why not? They have Augustine and Postava in the system. Don’t need all 3. Move one in part of a package for a top 6 guy

That’s kind of what I’m thinking, seems like have lots of goalies in the system

Why hasn’t Augustine been called up yet??

Claude Lemieux dead at 60.

He was the Avs player who hit Draper from behind in the playoffs. Subsequent season the Wings McCarty went after him in one of the games of the season if not decade. He apparently was a torch bearer for a Montreal game recently. No cause has yet to be reported.
