Sign Mitch Marner, they can’t afford to be “picky” about a superstar signing. Not to mention how often does a 100 plus point per game guy that also kills penalties come available?
Then we just need a goalie to develop and one more solid D guy.

Man, Essex County (the adjacent county to Wayne on the Canadian side) produced some really bad mofos back in the day. Probert, McCarty and Domi all in the league at the same time. My brother played against Domi in junior, and he would skate in front of the opponent bench and say “I’m Domi, wanna go me?”
I met Probert a few times, totally chill dude when off the ice… and sober.
I once was at a Harvey’s in Windsor and these freaking kids were running around screaming on the other side of the restaurant and I actually got up to see whose monsters they were, and… it turned out they belonged to Probie. So I just said hey, Bob, how’s it going?

He needs to get out of Toronto. So much pressure being a hometown hero. Detroit is the perfect destination for a second act. Add some toughness and give him more room on the ice. He’ll be fine in the D.

I don’t follow the league like I used to. But I’d be looking for the toughest, most skilled left winger I could find and put him on a line with Marner. Too bad Probert isn’t available, he’d be perfect.

SY has gotta be feeling a little heat now. He needs to pay what it takes to get Marner. Can’t waste money on the Copps, Comphers, Holls, and Terensankos. SY is actually terrible GM signing FAs. Great in drafting terrible in FA

3 1A defensemen in 1 draft(yes I’m counting Sergei) if that isn’t the best defensive draft of all time I’d love to see a better one.

Edmonton Oilers only had 6/29 (20.7%) players on the team that were drafted by the Oilers.
Florida Panthers only had 5/25 (20%) players that were drafted by Florida.
Meaning 80% of the roster was made by Free Agency or Trades.
And how has Steve done in that department? HORRIBLE!

I think your overall point is strong, as he has missed the mark here at the end of the day.
I’m having a hard time agreeing with a lot of your grades though.
For example the Cat trade gets a B from you, to me that’s an A all day long. You give signing Gustafson a B, when to me that’s easily a C-D range pickup.

Gustfuson contract makes it ok. Only 2m for depth Defender is manageable.
And cats lower because he has been up and down.
But he IS a nearly PPG player so yea A*
But yea still. Like the mid tier guys steve has gotten have been ok. Fine enough. But his “big swings”
Copp, Chairot, Tarrisanko, Holl, Marazikz are 23m total. For what? A bunch of 3rd liners? Blocking the Prospects.

I sure as hell wouldn’t give Marner $14 million which is his ask. I don’t know what a regular season diva that is afraid of his own shadow goes for but it can’t be that much. I don’t know that he will score as many goals away from Matthews either. His shot is a total muffin and he avoids traffic areas, he gets his goals because everyone overplays Matthews as the shooter.

Who is more likely to help the Red Wings make the playoffs? Marner, or Bennett plus a Dman?
I think Marner more easily helps the Red Wings make the playoffs, than a Bennet & Dman combo (depending who that Dman is). The Red Wings already have a Bennett on the roster-his name is Marco Kasper.
Regardless either addition/combination would be great. I’m not joining the hate wagon for Marner, I would be pumped to land him

All i know its going to be a crazy off season for the wings. If its not Yzerman is probably gone. I want the playoffs, but winning a series is just as important, so these young guys know what it feels like to win

Marner is a very high end regular season player and he will put up points wherever he goes provided he plays with legit first liners. But he wants more money than guys like Rantanen who are just far superior players to him. Guy is completely delusional about how good he is.
