They won the Super Bowl.
We won the trade.

LOL.

He may get his. Can you imagine?

I hope it’s in the color rush jerseys with the new throw-back helmet.

Once Goff wins his 2nd Super Bowl here then we will have won the trade.

Both teams have won. And that’s great.
It’s just, the Rams have won a little more. You know, the ultimate kind of win.

I mean, people can have different goals, and both win in a trade. This is just how business works (and the stock market, housing market, etc).

For instance, if you are in the stock market as a day trader, you have vastly different goals than someone investing for their retirement 30 years down the line. It may make sense for the day trader to sell stock in a good company, because their earnings beat expectations this quarter. They can make a profit there. However, if the company has good fundamentals and growth potential, it may make sense for the long term investor to buy it, even though it is trading higher than it was last week. Both parties can ‘win’ because they have different goals.

I feel like it’s the same here. Everyone knew Stafford was older than Goff. In 2021, he was also probably better suited for an immediate playoff run. Stafford also didn’t want another rebuild, while Goff was probably happy for another chance to get back to the top (even if it took longer). The Rams wanted to ‘go for it’ in the short term, the Lions knew we had to gather resources and play a longer game based on the roster talent.

I think it’s a win for everyone. I do really like the model we are choosing though. A longer term build with more longevity, as opposed to ‘F THEM PICKS’ for a shorter window.

I think that luck plays a solid factor in winning a championship. If you get yourself to the playoffs several years in a row, the odds of things tilting your way go up. I know that the Bucs and Rams got rings with an “all-in” approach. But how many MORE teams have tried that and failed? A lot.

For instance, the Jets this year. Four plays into the season, and their hopes go down the drain. Bad luck for them. Now, they have to HOPE a 40 year old QB can come back from a major injury and still be elite, when he had already been declining for a couple of years. Not great odds. So, they are probably going to miss this short ‘window’ they crafted.

I’d rather have a longer window, and maybe get 5-7 tries with our current ‘core’ (which will evolve of course). It also makes for several fun seasons of watching, as opposed to 1 or 2 ‘great’ years followed by 5 crappy ones.

Win-win

Stafford took the Rams over the top
Goff is taking us to the top

Rams won 2021.

Detroit won 2022 & beyond.

Rams won 2021.

Lions won 2022 & 2023.

2024: to be determined

A rare win/win trade. I’m a believer that had we kept Stafford, we would now be a .500 or under team, just making playoffs maybe, losing, status quo.

Stafford and the Lions both had to move on in order to have success.

Win/win but your take on .500 boggles the mind. I think Dan and Ben would absolutely have loved coaching Stafford AND we would still be built around the run game first. Matt would have flourished the way Goff has.

Still, no need dealing in hypotheticals, fact is it was a brilliant move for both sides.

You can be boggled, but the drafts woulda been totally different. This team totally changed with the last two drafts. No doubt in my mind Dan and Brad woulda turned this team around with Stafford, just not so soon, and not to this level.

Had we kept Stafford and therefore not gotten the picks? Yeah, we’re a different team.

I like looking at this topic all these months later.

If we have Matt we likely win faster and 2022 isn’t that bad. At that point Matt WAS a superior QB. I have often posted that we got Goff at the equivalent point of Matt’s career where 2013 was HORRIFIC and Mayhew hired Caldwell. To me Jim saved Matt’s career and McVay finished what Caldwell started.

The Lions rebuilt Goff who wasn’t as broken as Matt was in 2013. Hell, Goff started a damn Super Bowl and actually WON playoff games plural.

Subtract Jameson and Gibbs as well as Iffy and LaPorta and this is STILL a solid roster. And who knows what else could been done by Holmes. Sewell is still here. Amon Ra is still here.

The real question to ask us could Goff had won a Super Bowl in place of Stafford IF Goff had the full support of his coaching staff and I think the answer is hell yes.

So Matt won his ring which I love. Good for him. But the Lions are FAR better off at this point. I assume we lock down Goff regardless of the outcome today AND we have Hooker on the roster. QB is in good shape.

Sat the Lions still won the North in 2023 with Stafford and Goff played the Lions in Detroit BUT the Rams have those three picks back…say Gibbs is on THEIR roster and they have their 2022 1st rd. pick on their roster…to me the Rams would be in better shape than us! We have a great but aging QB and we lack a few critical pieces while the Rams have Goff and lost no draft picks. Interesting to think about.

It requires imagining McVay as a better coach than he is.

Goff has stated that he was not in a good place with them, that the end was hard on him. To imagine Goff is where Goff is with the Rams instead of the Lions, is to imagine McVay had no part in his demise.

To imagine McVay is a SB winner without Stafford is to imagine he didn’t need Stafford to take over that final drive against Tampa.

It was a win/win and we are where we are because of it. There is zero regret and neither team could be in a better spot. I revel in the reality of where we are right now and who it’s with.

Maybe. I don’t think we would have won faster because of how much more the trade brought us. We wouldn’t have Iffy Laporta and Jamo as well

Also, we aren’t playing this offense with Matt. Jared and Johnson built this offense together after Goff sought out BJ to vent about how unprepared Lynn was. We would most likely be playing Staffords preferred offense of shotgun pass happy. More one dimensional

It’s worth noting BJ was here when Stafford was too. This offense, has been top five two years in a row. Stafford ran a top five offense once in 2011. Not in 2021 either when they won the SB

It’s not just Goff & Stafford! We got a lot of players in the draft because of that compensation. We wouldn’t be here today without that trade!

As much as I hate to say it, I don’t believe Stafford would’ve been a good fit with Dan Campbell. Goff is a “Dan Campbell Guy” and Stafford, like Swift and Hock, are talented players but I don’t know if they’re great fits for Campbell.

It’s probably moot because Stafford told Sheila he wanted out before Campbell was hired but if Stafford had decided to stay I am not even sure Campbell would’ve been hired as I don’t think that they were a great fit. I think it’s far more likely we would’ve hired someone like Saleh or Staley had Stafford committed to staying.

I’m pretty sure any NFL player would have been happy to experience Dan Campbell after having to deal with Matt Patricia
