Even their fanbase seems split over the matter. One thing’s for certain, they did A LOT of work on the tackles this year. Didn’t end up going that route, but it really seems like they have some concerns. And a torn patellar tendon is still an injury that no one’s really had a long career after. TBD I suppose.
I don’t want to trade up more than a Brian Branch few spots for him. I just haven’t considered him much because he seems outside of a prudent reach for us.
Say he’s there at 40… I’d be thrilled to trade 50 + a 4th and 5th to get him.
I think they still need a RT.
How did you like the new 8 minute rule. I hated it. There was no suspense. You knew 3 picks ahead that your team did not make a trade. I would be okay with it if it was commercial free. But that thrill of watching the clock run down wondering if they were trading out of the pick was gone.
Like I believe this most likely is the death rattle for Manu.
But sure take flyers on the risky day 3 guy….no more trading up for the risky boom and bust guy…….bc when he is hitting singles and selecting high end targets he is unmatched.
I am eating this:

A healthy serving of crow keeps us all grounded. I know I’ve eaten my share.
Well I was watching on the Bootleg Football Youtube show, so I still had plenty of suspense, since they didn’t know if a pick got traded until well after it happened (and didn’t post it either). They also cut to the actual audio of Roger making the pick, so I at least got that part in real time, or whatever delays they were working with. But everything in between was just them talking about prospects, which is what I wanted and why I watched it there.
Im not sure why so many people get their panties in a bunch over Manu. We gave up a 3rd rounder in the next year’s draft straight up for a 4th rounder. It isn’t like we traded that 3rd rounder and our current 4th to just move up. That seems like a very reasonable price to pay for a guy with that much upside at a super premium position. Some of the other trades he did in the 3rd round left me scratching my head but not the Manu pick.
The draft is so funny. It was just yesterday when I was trying to talk myself into believing that maybe Manu was progressing and they didn’t feel like they needed to take a tackle round one…
I like those guys. Listened to them less this year than I have in the past. And side note: I feel bad for Trevor too. He’s been doing a lot of solo podcasts on the NFL Stock Exchange. I can’t help but wonder if its because he was let go at PFF and just trying to scratch some money together.
For the record, I have always been fine with these moves, but if they don’t hit, they do hurt.
Trevor seems like a great dude but I’ve never been his biggest fan as an evaluator (or entertainer, really, too many inside jokes). That said I fully expect him to land on his feet, all of his peers love him.
On the regular telecast you could see scrolling across the bottom that the pick was in for a team selecting 3 or 4 spots later. So you already knew if they selected a player or traded the pick. I waited all year for those precious 15 minutes that the Lions were on the clock for 50+ years and it is gone. Granted it was no fun watching the other teams use the whole 15 minutes and then select the player you knew they were going to take all along.
Exactly. You think you can’t trust info just before the draft? What teams say about the player they drafted is largely bullshit.
“Man, we almost traded up to number 1, just to make sure we could get this guy.”
Sure, I bet they’re largely honest about the reasons why they liked the guy they chose, but there’s a 0% chance you’re going to get a truthful read on the draft strategy, where the guy ranked, or who else may have interested them.
Same here, because the logic was sound. Take a super-high ceiling guy in the mid-rounds when you’ve got a strong roster. If he hits big, it’s like winning the lottery. If he fails, it’s not a gigantic loss compared to most of the other players that get taken there. It’s an asymmetric risk, but asymmetrically favorable. Those are good risks to take.

I’ve been a huge Manu apologist here, and I still am, but the Miller selection pretty much confirms that the staff doesn’t see a likely path to counting on Gio to be starter-ready by next year.
I still say it’s not a failure if he can develop into a high-end swing guy, as that’s valuable, too. But I think this draft pick puts the hypothetical best outcomes for Manu in the “highly unlikely” category.
Join the 7000 of us over at Bootleg! I doubt there are as many tonight, actually, but they’re back doing it. I preferred them to the Athletic’s draft show which is what I watched last year. I love Dane’s info but he is just so dry.
The main telecasts have leaned so hard into the aspects of draft broadcasting I hate that I had to switch. All of that vomited info just ends up being spoiler-y, as you mentioned. Player interviews are utterly pointless (I hate this across all sports). Just boiler plate nonsense 99.9% of the time, and anything that isn’t I’ll see on here/Reddit/Twitter eventually anyway. All of the weirdos announcing picks on day 3. The pomp, the glitz, the utter inanity. I hate it. I started watching NFLN rather than ESPN a long time ago because of all of that, and now they’re just as bad.
And on top of that they got rid of the stuff I actually liked! Not enough player analysis, no talk of team scheme or fits. Most of them can’t show video which is too bad, but I’ve already watched most of them anyway.

I agree they’re unlikely to come out and say anything like that, but when it lines up with what many of us have been saying in here for months, it’s far more believable.
I thought the best thing from the day 1 telecast is when they went into the Styx song Renegade for the Steelers pick. Meanwhile 4 more picks are in scrolling acroos the bottom.
that was definitely cool. I knew the song but couldn’t remember the artist so thank you.
