Defense definitely going wrong way, offense should be better than this
They scored 33 points. Offense is not the problem.
not according to MCDC
To a coach, anything under 100 points scored is not enough and 1 point scored by the opposition is too many.
As Peter King points out, this is our best record since JFK was president.
Thank you! We are 9-3. Do I wish the team was playing better? Absolutely! But I also see the progression this team had made in 3 years.
great so now it’s the jfk curse
We need to make SOLF a thing. Same Ole Lions Fans. 9-3, fighting for a division title and a lock for the playoffs and people are whining about not winning by enough points.
I get when people make suggestions for improvement or are upset we didn’t sign a particular player. But the constant complaining about winning is pretty ridiculous at this point.
When you win a game finishing in the victory formation it’s a good day.
I often look at point differential to see if a team is really as good as their record. The 9-3 record is a little flattering to the Lions. Nowhere on the scale of Minny last year, and not even the Eagles of this year, but certainly a little flattering.
i think while the offense can still put up points
Ben Johnson has been on a legit questionable stretch of playcalling since the bears game
AG you could argue had a solid defensive game against the bears considering the amount of turnovers in that game, and a lil with the packers (second half defense imrpoved, only gave up a touchdown cause they cause of the failed fake punt)
AG needs to go, not in defense of him, but Ben Johnson has been arguably on a worse stretch of playcalling lately
Big thing with minny last year was they had like
-20 point differential at this point of time
Kirk Cousins had like 8 game winning comeback drives
it was just not sustainable
I think ours isnt, but we can atleast keep up, if we dont get in our own damn way
I don’t give us much hope as a contender because of the lack of defensive structure. I really don’t think our talent is anywhere near as bad as people portray but we have no structure, no game plan, just kids on a playground, and some of them are playing out of position. It’s sad. But hopefully we play some really bad QBs in the playoffs.
You got it.
They are winning the close games they would have lost during the past 30 years, and I for one will take an ugly win over a pretty loss any day of the week and twice on Sunday!
im kinda in the boat where its both to do a degree
There is regression on the front four, houston being injured doesnt help (they looked better yesterday, Bruce Irvin already made a significant impact yesterday, they were getting into carrs face multiple times)
Back 4, two very crucial injuries to CJGJ, and Mosley, with a period of time where we had no branch either, but they just give up everything, some of that is scheme, some is them ■■■■■■■ up their assignments (looks at kerby joseph)
LB group has been great though, yeah Campbell has shown his rookieness, but they stepped up yesterday with Anzalone out
I lack sufficient ‘football knowledge’ to agree or disagree with this.
However, I don’t think a ‘lull’ is shocking. He is now 1.5 years in as a ‘full’ offensive coordinator. This league is brutal, with some of the best football minds in the world (I know the college world has a few as well). Even if Ben is objectively excellent, he has ‘tendencies’ like anyone else. With enough tape, opposing defensive coaches can make his life harder.
There is now enough ‘on film’ for defenses to start to mess with Johnson’s preferred systems/combinations/blocking scheme/etc. This makes life harder, as something that worked 6 weeks ago doesn’t work very well any more. You basically have to be perpetually ‘inventive’ and be making up new stuff all the time. Sure, you have your base scheme. But the defense will have counters to it. Can you adjust to their counters? And then, when they adjust again, can you counter the NEW adjustments?
It is a very hard job. This is why I’m happy with ‘ugly’ wins. The NFL season is LONG, and the teams tweak their stuff constantly. I think he is up to the task, but I’m not shocked if there is a bit of a ‘sophomore slump.’
biggest issue with schemeing rn
WR Screens have been terrible all year long, defenses see it instantly
we never do TE screens, and only screens ive seen that have worked RB screen
3rd quarter offense, eye test, its been atrocious, he gets cute with the play calling (the affromentioned screen passes, a run play 3 times in a row for a easy 3 and out)
Lack of Playaction, when Goff is legit one of the best PA qbs in the game, and has killed defenses with it.
Lack of using Jamo as a more consistent weapon (hes improving alot, but he doesnt get many looks, could be a goff thing, but i think its scheming)
The Packers had a lot of injuries, including Jaire Alexander, when they played us. I just think better coaches know how to adapt.
