His players didnt know the over time rules . He drafted lance when really not needed and he didn’t stick to him burning all picks .should he have gone second on offense in overtime like in college football to get better idea ?
There’s definitely mistakes he made. BUT.
He went against. bill/Tom and Andy/Pat
The goats. Hard to criticize someone for coming up just short against those guys
He’s a great coach… just can’t win the big one yet.
Keep in mind…they said that about Andy Reid for years and years in Philly. He’s got a bunch of rings now.
He is a top coach no doubt. I do think he is head strong about some things and that hurts him at times. That said few teams have had as much consistent success as the 49ers since he got there.
As a side note, I’m deep in 49er land and I couldn’t help but watch the game and think “Geez, the Lions are better than both these teams. 49ers were so lucky. If the Lions had played the chiefs, it likely would have been a track meet.”
The league has to think that the Lions would have been a more fun game for all fans.
He’s an awesome designer of offense and playcaller. He’s not the best manager of the game although I thought he handled things well yesterday for the most part.
He deserves to be a HC because he is a great offensive mind. I personally think there are a ton of better head coaches out there though. With that said, he has consistently found the right person to coach on defense which has helped him tremendously.
Andy Reid is probably the best Coach in the NFL.
Mahomes is the best QB.
Shanahan is a very good football coach who just becomes someone very different in a Super Bowl. He has played a part in losing 3 of them now when he had the lead in all of them. He has a good offensive mind, but I’m not sure he ever wins a SB.
What did he do wrong last night? The coin toss? Not going for it on 4th and goal in overtime?
I didn’t really have an issue with Kyle’s decisions this time.
I thought he went away from the run too much.
I can see that. I was more so concentrating on his game management decisions which I regularly find questionable.
Which he always does in the big game. He forgets what got him there.
Strangely everyone goes away from the run against the Chiefs - the Ravens did it too - despite them having one of the best secondaries in the league. The fear of Mahomes is strong.
In all fairness, if the kicker doesn’t flub an extra point they probably win
They also said that about Marty Schottenheimer, and he had zero Super Bowl games across four franchises.
Not sure he gets back to one with the 49ers.
Definitely.
It took Tom Landry over a decade as a HC to win a SB in Dallas. Same with Shula (in Baltimore then Miami). Reid took even longer. Shanahan will win one eventually. His Dad didn’t win one in his first HC gig with the Raiders. He had to regroup as an OC back in San Francisco in the early 90s before becoming a legend in Denver.
I think Kyle is a damn good coach. I think a big part of where he could learn and grow is in the details of football that MCDC obsesses over.
Was going to put this in another thread, since we have 3 similar ones at the moment.
With the exception (to the rule) of Nick Foles’ Eagles, the last several SB champions have had studs at the QB position. Shanahan’s odd bet has been that Purdy can be Tom Brady, or that he can buck the trend of needing a superstar behind center.
I said during the regular season that the 49ers weren’t bullet proof, and I got a lot of shit for that. But it was a fairly simple assessment: when things didn’t go perfectly for Purdy this season, he faltered. He can’t lift a team. He lucked out against Green Bay and he lucked the ■■■■ out against Detroit.
Bottom line? The 49ers had precisely ZERO business even in the NFC championship game, let alone the Super Bowl.
So, of course, they meet a team that does have a stud at QB and can overcome just about anything, and they do.
It’s why the Super Bowl was maddening. If Detroit was there, and they should’ve been, they wipe the floor with the Chiefs.
Shanahan made the same bet with Jimmy G and failed. He made the same bet with Trey Lance, and more failure.
SF is done if they walk into 2024 with Purdy. They won’t win 10 games with him next year. Watch.
Nick Foles is definitely not an exception. “Big Dick Nick” crushed it in his NFC Championship and Super Bowl games. He averaged over 350 passing yards and 3 TDs, with 0.5 interceptions.
In just those 2 games Nick had 6 passing TDs. In those games for Purdy, he had 2 passing TDs.
