Should Not Have Played Montgomery

Outside of one run he was brutal. Was not ready to play. I felt every time he was out on the field we were playing right into Washington’s hands. Gibbs needs to be the premier back.

I wasn’t worried about the injury bc I do not think they’d play him if not close to 100%.

I was annoyed because Gibbs is hottest player in NFL last few weeks and every carry from DMO too away from him.

Gibbs was averaging over 10 per carry and we keep bringing in Dmo

That Montgomery extension is really bad. I love him, just like I loved Jamaal…but anyone is going to be successful in that role in this offense. Highest paid backup by 2x in the league

Except, and this is what really grinds my gears, our coaching staff doesn’t view Montgomery as the backup.

Montgomery has started every game he has been healthy as a Lion. Gibbs only gets to start when Montgomery doesn’t play even though it’s obvious to anyone who isn’t a coach for the Detroit Lions that Gibbs is the best running back in the NFL.

blah blah blah. Shut up. :zipper_mouth_face:

Montgomery was the most perplexing decision of the game from the coaching staff outside of the Jamo pass attempt. Like WTF. The guy looked slower than usual and Gibbs just had his best game as a pro. I can’t forgive on this one.

Yeah…I liked it at the time, but I don’t think it’s going to look so good in a couple years. The emergence of Gibbs as an absolute superstar makes it even worse.

Was Monty really the problem yesterday?

And its also a disgustingly good RB draft this year

I think Monty is fine, and he will still be Monty next year, but good Argument we could have let him go for a younger model in the draft.

I agree and Gibbs should have carried the Rock 25-30 times this game. 14 carries is just bad play calling especially when your QB is having a bad game.

I think in got to have it games we can push for more carries for Gibbs. In the course of a regular season stretch keep him rested and healthy.

Monty is an important piece. He clearly wasn’t himself IMO.

I don’t think he was a problem. It’s just, they refuse to put Gibbs and Monty on the field together and with the way Gibbs has been playing since Monty went down…Gibbs not being on the field IS a problem.

Not sure why people are turning on Monty? He is still a very important piece and if we want to see Gibbs stay on the field, we need both of them.

Monty had 7 touches for 28 yards yesterday, and that includes that 4 yard loss where he got blown up as soon as he got the ball.

Gibbs probably played 75-80% of the snaps.

The reason we lost yesterday is the offense turned the ball over 5 times. If you take two of the first four turnovers away, we have a very good chance to win.

One of these things is not like the other:

Lions put a player coming off a serious injury on the field first over the NFC Player of the Month:

  • 1st & 10 at DET 40

(15:00 - 1st) D.Montgomery right tackle to DET 42 for 2 yards (F.Luvu).

  • 2nd & 8 at DET 42

(14:30 - 1st) D.Montgomery up the middle to DET 37 for -5 yards (D.Fowler).

Gibbs first contributions in the game:

  • 1st & 10 at DET 48

(10:00 - 1st) J.Gibbs right tackle to WAS 37 for 15 yards (M.Sainristil; D.Fowler).

  • 1st & 10 at WSH 37

(9:34 - 1st) (No Huddle, Shotgun) J.Goff pass short left to J.Gibbs pushed ob at WAS 14 for 23 yards (M.Sainristil).

  • 1st & 10 at WSH 14

(8:55 - 1st) J.Gibbs right end to WAS 5 for 9 yards (N.Igbinoghene; F.Luvu).

  • 2nd & 1 at WSH 5

(8:16 - 1st) D.Montgomery up the middle to WAS 1 for 4 yards (D.Armstrong).

  • 1st & Goal at WSH 1

(7:36 - 1st) D.Skipper reported in as eligible. J.Gibbs left end for 1 yard, TOUCHDOWN. J.Bates extra point is GOOD, Center-H.Hatten, Holder-J.Fox.

Maybe if Ben leaves, the new OC will figure out the distribution of playing time doesn’t need to be 50-50, but more like 65-35 or 60-40 Gibbs.

I don’t think anyone’s turning on Monty. It’s just obvious who the better back is and it’s by a landslide. RB2s shouldn’t be making close to 10m a season. I think everyone views him similar. Love what he brings to the team and he’s been solid. But a day 2 or 3 rookie can produce what he does in this offense for 1/10th the price.

I think the Lions view Monty like the Saints viewed Mark Ingraham in Alvin Kamara’s first few years. It probably extended Kamara’s career and was very effective.

Go back and re-watch the Rams game. Monty carried the team on his back for the win in overtime.

Monty has been awesome and is better than a random guy off the street. If Gibbs gets hurt we’re all going to be glad we have Monty because he absolutely can be a feature back.

However, Gibbs has been playing out of his mind and Monty is coming off an injury that could’ve sidelined him for longer.

I’d say in most games split the carries 50/50. However in games like playoff games or must win games, tilt it more 70/30 towards Gibbs and give Gibbs the start.

I’m as upset as anyone about the collapse yesterday, but anything other than absolute glee at having D-Mo on this team is unwarranted.

Monty is not the problem.

The problem is that the staff had trouble recognizing what was and wasn’t working yesterday. When Jared Goff is off, it’s pretty obvious early on, but the staff didn’t do him many favors. We can win if Goff has a bad game by relying on the running game. Instead we tried to have Jamo pass a ball to Gibbs.

The Monty contract is fine IMO.

When he’s back to himself he continue in his role and that is as the thunder in this offense.

He wasn’t ready to play yesterday and it was foolish to try and force it. It’s on the coaches, Ben and Dan. Not Monty.

He’s all heart and he’s no Jamaal Williams. He’s got some wiggle and can make guys miss. He just wasn’t ready for prime time last night.

Just for reference the Cardinals just gave James Conner (who is 2 years older than Montgomery) a 2 year $19 million contract extension versus Montgomery’s 2 year $18.25 million extension.

Montgomery and Conner have similar stats and similar impact to their respective teams.

The contract is absolutely market value for that kind of back.
