I used to watch Bob Sanders every week. That guy was major badass. Could tell right away he was destined for the injury list.

Tracey Walker wasn’t all that good to begin with. He was fine. Starter level good prior to the Achilles but hardly special.

I don’t disagree but Holmes did give him 25 million so he thought he was at least decent
He was. And he had a ton of matchup versatility. I thought he was pretty good at neutralizing TEs and big slots before the Achilles and then he could also do some box stuff. He was a solid safety prior to the injury. But Kerby and BB with long healthy careers would be Canton threats. Maybe not quite that level but legit stars.

My biggest concern for this season is that we lose both, Kirby and BB.
We just can’t catch a break on Defensive injuries. It’s getting old.

Frog and Boyd playing safety by mid season guaranteed. 
I do have some experience playing safety. But my shoulder hurts, and my left knee works sometimes.
Essentially we are ready bud!

Hmmmm. I wonder if this is why we stopped spending big on safeties. Everytime he does, it backfires.

We lost super stars at safety and replaced them with solid guys.
The good news is - you can win Super Bowls with solid guys, a good OL and clutch QB

I also played safety on a winless team…but issues weren’t me, I was a stud of course 
I have a pretty good story about sucking so bad lol…
We are going through film after just getting demolished by a local rival. Down 38-0, their RB broke through the front 7 and as he made a cut towards the sideline to burn me yet again he starts to stumble and he’s definitely going to the ground. I’m exhausted (also played WR) and simply push him to “finish him off.” Well…that totally helps him gain his feet and boom…gone Coach rewinded that and roasted me for a good 2-3 minutes along with my teammates haha.

Its the worst thing ever. They were both truly like the next Polamalu and Reed. Two of the best safeties in the league and we had both. And Branch falling to the 2nd round and being as good as he was right away is rare. Even more rare is Kerby a 3rd round pick. Both hitting their prime. And Branch will probably miss out on being paid.
These were the two most exciting players for me to watch.

I love the safety position. Growing up I loved the duo of Tim McDonald and Merton Hanks. Thats what I thought we had in BB & Kerby (ours were even better imo). It’s crushing that it didn’t last long. Both ranked higher than they should on my list of favorite current Lions.
The only saving grace or silver lining I can come up with is that they are just safeties. Not saying the position isn’t important, but losing an elite corner or edge for their careers would’ve been more devastating.
I have my hopes and fingers crossed both players can return to ~75% form. It would still make for an excellent duo. But if just one becomes a long term, highly productive Lion, I will consider that a big win at this point.

Exactly. If the offense gets back to what it should be we don’t need a top defense. Just make key stops when they need to. Add in a few clutch turnovers and we win.

Honestly, I’d be a solid bet to say that Kerby and Branch are out of the NFL in 2-3 years. The examples of either having a degenerative knee issue that has kept a player out for a long period, or a DB that comes back and plays effectively after an achilles injury, are basically nil. sadly, I would say its more likely than not that we need to replace both of these guys.
Watch out - this is the one topic even more charged that politics and religion…
