Maybe? I personally know 4 ppl who independently got back into cards around November/December on their own. It’s weird bc none of them, or I, had been into cards for 15-20 years. Repacks are huge rn, the first one I bought on whatnot got me a quad auto /25, LeBron and a few other names… Made me $1200… Been buying cards since
I like watching car channels on youtube. One of the guys said that you can predict which used cars will suddenly rise in value. He said to find the cars that young people wanted but couldn’t afford (or were not old enough to drive). Those people will go thru different stages in their lives, making more money over the years. But they will also have lots of obligations as well, like raising kids. Eventually some of those people will reach a level of stability that allows them to reach into their past and have things that they wanted when they were younger.
Obviously trading cards are not cars. But what the guy said does help explain why some things that were popular X years ago suddenly come back again. And it perfectly explains my situation. Seeing that trading cards are alive and well has me ready to jump back in. I was an avid collector as a kid in the 80’s and early 90’s. I never had money to buy the cards I wanted in the after market, I could only buy packs and hope to get the cards I wanted. I was literally using my paper route money to buy them, as well as comic books. I also traded for some good cards as well. There was a 15-20 year period where getting back into trading cards would have seemed silly and wasteful compared to my other obligations. Now I can enjoy it, and share old stories with other people who have a similar passion.
My “old” collection has some good cards. Think about the late 80’s and early 90’s. Rookie cards like Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith, Brett Favre, Ken Griffey, David Robinson, etc. I also have a special edition card with the “Bo and Barry Show.” It was when the Lions faced the Raiders on MNF.
That absolutely is part of it… I see it in music right now too. Bands I used to listen to in the late 90s early 2000s are suddenly making new music and playing huge shows again. Then I look at the prices of the concert tickets and in like, really? Back in the day I could see 5 of those bands for 75 bucks, now it’s 150-200 per person. My generation has entered the stage of life where we’re making more money and can afford the “fun” stuff.
And… Keeping up with the Jones’ is a thing… I saw a couple buddies buy and break a box, that made me want to jump into the action… Capitalism is infectious!
I don’t, but my 9 year old step son is the biggest Lions fan of the kids and I passed by a new sports cards store the other day so I went in hoping to find a Hutchenson card for his birthday. The counter dude said he didn’t know but I could look through the NFL box. I didn’t have long to dig through it but I did find a Gibbs card.
Guy who ran the store gave it to me for free! Probably cost him nothing but he now has a lifetime customer who will always reccommend his store. I’ll always stop in there around birthday time now.
If anyone finds themselves in Middletown, Connecticut check out East Coast Collectables! https://www.ec3cardshop.com/
and i got home from a busy day at work and pretty much passed out soon after
Not before eating at a local resturant and enjoying their honolulu blue burger(yes lions themed burger) it was a burger with mozzerella cheese/sonic sauce/bacon/ham/pineapple
Also went on whatsnot and picked up a few new cards i bought one for the uniqueness to it a hideo nomo /25 game used lumber card
Went to nationals for the first time over the weekend… While I had fun, I’ll never go again. Prices were so inflated it wasn’t even funny… That, coupled with the vendors offering 70% and most not wanting to buy anything except easy sells like kabooms or DTs, made it irritating to say the least. I had a few guys just toss my slabs back at me without a word, like they were disgusted with them… Not small cards either, $500-$1000 value.
On Whatsnot I even watched a few open a auction and then when it didnt sell well he cancelled it and re-ran it
Customs are more fun usually cheaper and are for PC but lately I been buying them because they come out cooler then the regular cards and there is alot more possibilities but im not buying to resell im buying to keep
