Apparently, Michael Ohers “adoptive parents” didn’t adopt him at all. He just found out it was only a conservatorship (he doesn’t inherit from the Tuohys) that was created when he was an adult (they mislead him to think it was an adoption) and they used that conservatorship to enrich themselves with deals.
Well that took a turn for the gross and disappointing. I was a big advocate of Oher coming out of that draft but never watched the movie because it seemed like virtue-porn schlock
On topic, what a shame of a story. At this point I don’t even want to hit the lottery to live the great life and have a ton of fun. I want to hit the lottery to buy an uninhabited island and go live on it.
I feel like this is probably way too crazy to preconceive. I’d be willing to wager their original intentions were honorable and wanting to adopt Oher. Probably the lawyer relative pushed them into the way of conservatorship most likely as a way of icing him out of their wealth to ‘protect’ their own kids inheritance
Then it’s an old story after that - Money makes people funny. They should have insisted he get a cut of the royalties from the movie
We often trust our parents at the age of 18. I know I did. If they convinced him that he was family, he probably trusted them more than he should have.
