The Data sure points to SHEP… not Brad, Dan, or especially Goff

The blitz looks have been…. less than creative.

It is wild to watch the Vikings or Seahawks or Patriots… or many other teams.. that show a 7 man rush pre-snap… and then drop out… rush 4-5 guys and totally confuse the QB.

We don’t do that…. at all.

.

.

When the Lions “blitz”… they have 4 down DL players… and a LB walks up to a OG head up… and then rushes right into his chest.

Another great post sir!

So we play 3 LBs about 90% of the time. Our LBs have 10.5 sacks so far.

We play either 5 DBs and 3 DL or 4 DL and 4 DBs 90% as a result. When we play with 3 DL we allow lots of yards and the ground and generate very little pressure. When we play 4 DL and 4 DBs- we get killed by the slot if we play 2 high safety looks and try and have AA pass off slot responsibility to a deep safety. If we move Branch into the slot, we have been leaving freaking Harper in single high and letting him guess whether to double the deep cross or try and stay over the top on a go route. Go figure the 27 year old UDFA can’t really do that effectively.

Hutch/AQM

Alim/Tyliek

Reader/Lopez

Davenport/Lacy

Campbell/Barnes

Anzalone/Rodrigo

NB- Madox

CB- Robertson

CB- Reed

FS- Kerby/Harper

SS- Branch

Try that for an entire game and keep the DL fresh

Or watch Turpin smoke AA… then watch them cheat Branch up… then watch them send Lamb and Pickes both deep on 5’9” CBs in man with Harper left to guess who to help

lol

Especially when your ball hawk cover 1 free safety has been out for 7 weeks. It’s the lack of adjustments that is concerning. Jordan Love didn’t look confused all day. He looked comfortable and like the Lions defense was doing exactly what the the Packers expected.

Another thing why not move Hutch inside over guards sometimes? Especially on 3rd downs. We used to do that with AG sometimes. Haven’t seen it this year. He’s pretty easy to double on the edge when you know where he’s gonna be

Playing man coverage only works well when your front 4 are getting home. Playing man and giving the QB 4 seconds to pass is a recipe for disaster

Our defense is supposed to be built on stopping the run.

It’s year 5 of this bullshit system, and guess what we can’t do?

What’s that?

We can’t stop the run worth a damn with our entire front seven healthy?

Hmm…

Blows my mind cause the run defense was much better early in the season and we seem to be regressing in that area. No excuse with the high priced front 7 we have to not stop the run.

this is where I wonder if the ‘grit’ preach is wearing thin. Kill yourself and not show the same production as just last year or the year before. Almost like teams aren’t surprised by the effort and are giving what they’re getting.

So the defense is bad because the offense stinks?

EPA/P lions rush defense is actually 3rd in the NFL.

The problem tho is. The success rate.

I have to see if i can find a success rate rush average. They might give up to many home runs. But they give up the first down

Its both.

23 & 24

The Lions offense was SOOOOO good. They almost ALWAYS had a decent lead. Meaning the opposing offense had to go away from their gameplan and start going for the big plays, which allowed the defense to be more aggressive. Blitz more. Play the ball. Get turn overs.

This year however the offense isnt as nearly as efficient. Meaning the opposing offense can run its game plan. Stay on script. Which means the Lions have to play more base defense. Play honest.

Harder to get turn overs. Harder to blitz with out giving up a big play.

Its all about being in control of the game. In the drivers seat.

How many quarters this season have the Lions have the Lions been in the drivers seat? Controling the game?
Maybe 5-6 TOTAL out of 48?

Last few years there may have been 10-12 per season total the lions were NOT in control of the game

So it’s sheps fault the Oline is playing bad ? Is it his fault guys are dropping passes every week, is it his fault we did not get a #2 DE. Is it his fault Dan doesn’t take points and then just run it straight at them on every 4th down.

It’s not any one thing it’s multiple things and almost everyone is playing apart.

The opening drives this year for the defense have been laughable most weeks. I mean how do you start the game off giving up points most weeks? The Packers absolutely dictated exactly how they wanted our defense to play. The Vikings come to Detroit and we can’t do anything against that defense and lose to “9”. I watched the Patriots get up 17-0 on the Giants and was never a game. We had to go into OT after being behind most of the game. There’s definitely something missing from the coaching imo. The team doesn’t look they are having any fun. Doesn’t look prepared to start the game and we aren’t “bullying” anyone around like we have the last 3 years.

We do have a #2 DE…..some how it’s Alim McNeil the DT that we gave a 100 million to. And we wonder why we have the slowest pass rush in the NFL. Brad definitely doesn’t get a free pass on the Dline from me.

AG was intense but he laughed and had fun at the same time. Shepp is just intense. Same for Ben vs. Morton. Ben was a stickler for detail but he was a laid back fun personality. Morton comes across and boring and unapproachable. So we went from two coordinators that were detailed and demanded excellence but also seemed to have fun with the players. The two new coordinators don’t seem to enjoy the players as much. So if you are a coordinator you better be brilliant at outscheming the opponent or brilliant at motivating and getting the absolutely best out of the players. I feel like we took a step back at both positions. Not saying the coordinators can’t get better but right now we behind.

People can talk shit about Goff, but, he’s not a problem.

On Offense, it’s the Line. That’s Brad and Dan.

On Defense, it’s the Line. That’s Brad and Dan.

It’s been a well known fact for nearly 100 years that, “Everything starts in the Trenches”.

That has been the one constant, no matter the era.

Shiny new toys are what the fans want. It’s the job of management to see through that and make sure that the team has ALL of the pieces needed to be effective.

The Lions defense the past few games has felt like watching a Patricia led defense.

Goff is the least of our problems, could he play better sure, but people around have to play better for that to happen.

How many teams have two excellent defense ends? Which teams are willing to trade away a great defensive end? The answer to both questions is, not many.

Can we get the Jets, the Dolphins, the Browns, and the Bengals in our division? All four of those teams have been pretty putrid for the last 20 years.

NOBODY is asking for 2 probowl caliber DEs but nobody has that.

But if a team has a probowl DE what else do they have?
At MINIMUM an above average DE on the other side.

Lions dont have that. Not even CLOSE.

Gp - Parson - Gary
PHI - little different with their scheme. But 2 probowl DTs, went and got Phillips. With nolan smith opposite
HOU anderson - Hunter
LAR - Verse - Young
CLE - garrett - gram (plays both 3t and de effectivly unlike McNeil)
PIT - Watt - Heihburg
SFF - Had Bosa got Huff (bosa died)

Whats the common thing with all of those teams?
They had 1 GREAT to ELITE pass rusher.

They then went out and drafted EALRY or made a trade for another one.

What have the lions done to help aiden again?

Davenport - Always injured - Shocking has played 160 snaps in 2 years.
Paschal - always injured- Still is
Levi - always injured- still is
AQM - Who is he still on the team?

I rest my case
