The Lions are once again not expected to be major players in free agency

Once again, I don’t see why people get so worked up over this.

It isn’t Madden

There just isn’t a big correspondence between swinging for the fences and Super Bowl wins

I hope we don’t sign any of them and get a draft pick for everyone that we lose. There are plenty of cap cuts that we can sign that won’t count against comp picks. Maybe Bradley Chubb?

Absolutely this. Why say anything? So other teams can up their offer for another competitor? Better to say nothing at all. Like he always does.

Albert Breer thinks otherwise.

I am left wondering what being a major player in free agency means.

If the expectation is that we are going to get a half-dozen of the top players and totally put ourselves in cap hell. Then, yes, we are not going to do that.

If the expectation is that they might grab an impact player and fill holes with bargain bin players, then I do expect them to do that.

It is all in your perspective.

Who are you going to believe? A named NFL reporter or a rando twitter account sharing its interpretation of a statement it does not quote, heard secondhand from “freep”?

The source is Dave Birkett, I heard Valenti talking about on the radio yesterday on my way home from work.

Birkett is pretty plugged in IMO.

Used to be. Since this regime came in, he’s much less it seems. He’s been wrong a lot.

This is the type of thing i wish QBhater was here for, man would give us the scoop on everything

miss him man, hope hes doing well.

This is all miss leading, we don’t need to go out and sign top of the market free agents, but we do need to sign some starting quality players.

We won’t sign say Trey but we might sign a guy like Franklin or Jones

Not Linderbaum but maybe Mays.

You are officially a more trustworthy source than random twitter account. Birkett is indeed plugged in–would still like to see the actual quote rather than secondhand interpretations.

That’s fine just sign T n T

Trey n Tyler

Sadly we just aren’t in a great spot to add much. We are tight against the cap with few players under contract, and we have to make a big extension for gibbs. The team has mentioned one for Campbell.. which is going to cost us a lot as well. We also don’t have a ton of draft resources. Im really hoping we trade down in the draft and pick up more assets, and resist trading back up.. we need a deep class this year.

This is also miss leading, we now have 9 draft pics , and we are strapped only till they restructure and contracts. We are on a position to do what we need if the need is there.

I could see Brad glazing some agents with talk of not making a big splash in free agency – helps to tamp down perceived demand, keep the market affordable.

I don’t remember where I saw it but I heard we’ve been sniffing around Mays.

Two separate national reporters has us interested in centers.

I read that too

This is the only article that it could be pointing too.

# Can Lions pull off Maxx Crosby mega-deal? NFL trade activity swirling

The summation provided at the top of the article itself:

  • Lions GM Brad Holmes has a history of making trades in the early spring to fill positions of need.
  • Several factors, including a thin free agent class and numerous coaching changes, could lead to a more trade-intensive NFL offseason.
  • Despite fan speculation, the Lions are considered longshots to acquire Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby due to prohibitive cost.
  • Crosby, who has deep ties to the state of Michigan, reportedly wants out of Las Vegas.

Multiple agents who met with the Lions at the NFL combine do not expect the team to be major players in free agency, and one who spoke with the team believes they will move Tate Ratledge to center and open competition at the guard spots.

In all four of his spring trades, Holmes has acquired a player to fill a position of need, albeit one – Goff – to fill a hole he created on his own.
