I have been a tourist in the world of starvation. But I always knew I wouldn’t actually starve. I had money but couldn’t withdraw it. And I had family and friends that would shoot me some cash at the drop of a hat. I have gone some weeks where I was literally in starvation mode.
But I live in a place where people actually go hungry, including expats. There was Russian dude I came across in the village who asked me if I could buy him some food. And I’d had mostly unpleasant dealings with Russian expats in the past. But I bought him some food on two occasions for about $50 total. I never expected it to be repaid. But he gave me the money AND bought me twice that in groceries that he delivered to my house, much of which I wouldn’t eat personally, like white bread, pasta and hot dogs etc. But I left it at the bus stop near my house and it was gone fast.
There are hungry people around us. Many are like my neighbors, itinerant gardeners who travel around on their bicycles. I wouldn’t offer them food directly, but I know when I leave food out it will be taken by people who need it.
