we got bigger fish to fry than QB…Stafford is playing in 2021. we have to score on quality defensive players, replace Tavai, we need O-line help , WR help , RB , LB’s , better DE’s , a disruptive DT, maybe S or SS…the ideal situation is to repair our defense…
I never really got the Fields hype… I think he’s a good prospect physically, but don’t think he sees the field very well, that’s a tough problem to overcome.
Lols well that’s totally inaccurate.
Fields looked lost without his WR. I don’t think he’s carrying anyone. Fields = Haskins
Yeah if he’s there you run to the podium all right, and pic Micah Parsons and don’t look back.
Fields = Haskins
Agree to disagree. I find Fields and Haskins to be very different stylistically, in terms of amount of god given talent and most importantly from a leadership intangibles POV.
We will have to see if they are the same in terms of results. I definitely don’t see them as the same stylistically (like you said). I said before the draft that I put Haskins in to a camp with Byron Leftwich, Geno Smith, Cardale Jones, Jacoby Brisette and Jameis Winston. Those were my comps, and as I said at the time there isn’t a “successful” one in the bunch.
Shi Smith could be a mid to late round option to replace Amendola
He’s a nice slot prospect. I prefer Darden and Elijah Moore but I definitely think Smith is a solid prospect. I like Newsome as well for that role.
Yep. I think I remember you making those comps at the time. Fields looks like a more refined Dak Prescott to me. More refined coming into the draft I mean.
Trevon Grimes out of FLA is a big bodied WR I like. as long as your WR’s are complimentary, it’s just a matter of what’s your flavor. My WR’s I like coming out:
- D’Vonta Smith (Bama). Home run hitter in a league where you get a penalty for breathing on a WR. I think he’s the first WR gone.
- Rondale Moore (Purdue). Explosive, natural catcher of the football, great RAC. Turns into a RB after the ball is in his hands.
- Trevon Grimes (FLA). Kenny Golladay type WR, very fluid and a big, physical target. Matchup nightmare for DBs.
- Jaylen Waddle (Bama). I hope he can get healthy. Dynamic after the catch, like Moore, very RB like in the open field (vision, cutting, etc).
Who knows what WRs are resigned in the offseason, but I like these 4 a lot. In a perfect world, the Lions could trade back to middle of the first and get Smith. Make the offense elite, while trying to make the defense average, at best.
If Zach Wilson has jumped Fields, Fields will go to top 5 to Carolina and if we want a QB, we’re either looking at Trey Lance or Kyle Trask.
Mac Jones looks good but he has all the talent in the word around him, can’t trust a guy with every advantage to come in and be a revelation for a team that seems cursed.
Otherwise we’re sticking with Stafford and taking a look at whatever QBs down the line. I’d imagine getting a QB of the future will be high on the list, then building up around him while letting him develop under Stafford for a year. Seems like a good scenario to get a young QB and I can’t imagine the new GM passing on their opportunity to make their mark.
I like the DK Metcalf kid out of Ole Miss. But I wouldn’t spend more than a 3rd rounder on him. I’ve got my eye on an obscure 5th round LB that I want to use our 2nd round pick on. If DK is available after that, I think we should scoop him up! - Bob
I am thoroughly intrigued by Trey Lance. He’s a modern quarterback who moves better than Josh Allen or Herbert. His arm’s not quite as good but it’s plenty good enough and he’s more accurate. And he’s said to be the hardest worker on their team. The guy has made himself into this sort of prospect, and I love that. If we get this guy and coach him up correctly, I think he could be a superstar. I love what Daboll has done with Josh Allen, I’d feel confident he could do the same with Lance.
And with the upside of keeping Stafford for another year.
I’m not so certain. History tends to repeat itself. Take Aaron Rodgers for example. When he came out, many of the same things were said about him that are mirroring what has been said about Fields. Ted Ledford project, not pro ready, inflated college numbers, system quarterback, product of the system, Ted Ledford projects never turn out, etc.
I think there’s something to be said about situational prejudice blinding people from an independent evaluation. Couple that with a couple poor games in a small sample size, and I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that you could see Fields take a similar draft day tumble for the exact same reasons.
What do you think about that possibility?
If the Lions are sticking with Stafford, I think DeVonta Smith is a perfectly reasonable use of the first-round pick. Even a Top 8, Top 10 pick.
He’s incredible. He’s better than Jeudy and Ruggs. He’s as can’t-miss as Megatron was coming out of G. Tech.
And I’m the only one talking about him in a thread about WRs in next year’s draft?
Yeah. If Lance is the pick then I think he would benefit by sitting behind Stafford for a year.
There was definitely a ton of that talk. I think one interesting then now vs back then is how much more similar the pro passing game is to college these days. Its allowing QBs from seemingly gimmicky offenses to come in and feel somewhere comfortable from day one. I never thought I would see the day that a Texas Tech QB (for instance) was the best QB in the NFL.
No doubt, Texas Tech, Houston, lots of those programs produced QB’S with vastly inflated numbers. I still think Fields is in for a Rodgers like tumble on draft day due to the aforementioned factors I listed.
If he sucks in the semifinal, he may go back to school. Rehab his stock, shoot for a national championship.
