Tigers sign Gleyber Torres to play 2B (Keith to 1B)

Pretty good OBP with demonstrated power:

He will fit in well with Hinch and his lineup shuffle.
too your point, from the article:

As for offense, Torres is known for making smart swing decisions. He ranked in the 92nd percentile with a 21.4% chase rate. He also ranked in the 70th percentile in walk rate (9.8%), 60th percentile in whiff rate (22.9%) and 57th percentile in strikeout rate (20.5%). His walk rate is above average and his strikeout rate is average but his swing decisions are elite.

Most notably, Torres crushes left-handed pitching.

He balances the Tigers’ lineup as a right-handed hitter.

In 2024, Torres hit .265 with an .811 OPS against lefties. In 2023, he hit .278 with a .921 OPS against lefties. In 2022, he hit .256 with an .829 OPS against lefties. While hitting lefties, Torres has similar batting averages against right-handed pitchers despite not producing as much power against righties.

That’s not a good look for torkelson. I had such high hopes for him.

He still might turn a corner. It’s a 1 year deal, and I love the value and the upside with Torres

I’m not a huge baseball nerd, but what I’ve read implies Torres was solid SS as well as 2B before moving full time to 2nd the last 2…

Hypothetically-

Tigers sign Bregman

3B- Bregman/Jung
SS- Torres/Baez/Sweeney
2B- C Keith/Torres
1B- Torkelson/Keith

What if….

Bregman
Torres
Keith
Torkelson

Could all make the IF work with Jung and Sweeney for depth?

Say Tork sucks in the Spring….

Bregman
Baez/Sweeney
Torres
Keith/Tork

We really need to ink Bregman

Five or six years for Bregman, sure, anything longer than that I will pass.

6 years and 200M? Would you do that?

Personally, no.
But, if the Tigers do that I won’t complain about it.
I’d rather do four years 35m which I don’t see anyone doing.
I’d like to keep the aav around 30m and tbh, I just don’t want that many years as those deals rarely work out well in MLB.

Agree 100%

I just think he would give us enough pop with Torres to be competitive in 25’ from start to finish.

They may have that already. Especially if Tork and Baez aren’t in the lineup come game 1.

The realization that he isn’t going to get 200 million is starting to set in. In fact, Boras is probably costing him money at this point with the silly demands.

From what I have read, the Tigers want Bregman, and Bregman wants the Tigers. If they can find some middle ground, I bet it happens.

I, for one, would be a very happy person if it does. I’ve always been a fan of the guy.

Some of Boras clients last year took some team fiendly deals cause the market didn’t really turn out the way they hoped. Snell, Teo, Chapman all come to mind. They all eventually got paid though this off-season.

Bregman may want an opt out after year 1 in case he hits 35 to 40 bombs… For example 4 years 100 mill. Can opt out after first year. Snell and Chapman both signed similar deals last year.

I’ma big Tork fan…but I have come to the conclusion that the Tigers might have to trade him

A summary article on mlb about Seattle looking to trade one of their SP for inf help. One section speculates that seattle may have interest in Tork and other Tiger inf. Granted the pitcher Seattle is looking to move is a 32 yr old

Trust me…I hate to say this, but I don’t see it for Tork here in Detroit. I had a true boner for drafting him and has been, perhaps, his biggest fan. But the regression just doesn’t strike me as one he could overcome, at least here in Detroit.

I’ve been off the Tork train for a while, primarily due to my scouting friends, who I fought against early on.

Me to- I’m hoping 5 years and 160M gets it done?

Astros supposedly offered him 6yrs 156m if reports are correct, so roughly 26m per. Your offer is 32m per, I wouldn’t mind that deal at all. Will see what the market tells us.

I honestly don’t care much about the money. There is no cap, and it isn’t my money.

Like you though, I don’t want to be tied to him with a really long deal, that we know will turn bad.

32 per year, for 5 or 6 years, sounds good to me.

6 and 170M would be cool. Through age 36 seems not awful?
