Scouting report
Nola: He’s looking more like the Nola of two years ago, with a WHIP barely over 1.000, even if his strikeouts are down a bit. He’s allowed two or fewer runs in seven of nine starts since the start of May. He’s only had two clunker starts all season, though one was two starts ago.
Mize: Coming back from Tommy John surgery and back surgery was going to be a process for Mize, the top pick in the 2018 draft. There have been some positive signs lately, as he hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in any of his last five starts. Low strikeouts are baffling, though.
I have family in Fort Lauderdale, own a company in FL, my two oldest boys live in FL.
While I have family in Canada as well they are distant cousins and haven’t seen or talked to them in 20yrs.
So, yea, don’t really have an issue with it but tbf, I don’t really care about hockey.
I think Avila taking Mize was a result of the DD mindset of drafting pitchers and Mize was highly rated at the time. Bohm would probably be a strong fit for this front office.
I’m not going to label him a bust as the MLB draft is a crapshoot more than any other pro league imo, but a #3 starter at best more likely a #4. He will pitch in the league for ten years or so.
Being completely honest, I didn’t follow the MLB draft at all back then. I just heard we had the number one pick and that we were going to take this guy from Auburn that everyone said was really good.
And, after further review, we did get Tarik Skubal from that draft class, so it’s not all bad. Reese Olson was also drafted by the Brewers in 2018.
iirc Mize and Singer were the top two pitching prospects in the draft.
I think this pitching staff is the one who can get something out of Mize if anyone can. Not saying they will.
I think Al Avila got burned by the shift in how MLB teams viewed their high end prospects.
Remember early on in the DD tenure you would see prospects drop as the small market teams couldn’t meet their demands. So Boston, NY even Detroit thanks to Mike I was able to sign some decent prospects at the bottom of the draft.
DD used to trade prospects for players to get over the hump, yea, no WS titles, but he did manage to gut the minors in the process of chasing the WS. Teams would trade highly ranked prospects for MLB proven players.
So, to my brief defense of AA;
When Avila had to trade everyone the market shifted and teams were no longer willing to trade their highly rated prospects. The draft process had changed as well which means a slot was in place and small market teams could keep their prospects which then changed the trade value. It is why, while I still am glad he is gone, I have a little bit of understanding in what happened to Avila. Then add in the lack of development by the DD staff left in place and no analytics and he was really screwed.
Some of the players contributing today did come from his tenure, including as you pointed out Skubal.
His stuff still projects as a middle of the rotation guy, if not better. He lost a big ole chunk of time because of the arm injury. He’s really still in the development stages of his career.
He’s never going to live up to the expectations of a #1 overall, but he should still have a solid career.
