Last few sentences on last night’s win over the Royals.
It was a day when a 21-year-old rookie scored the winning run and a 38-year-old reliever closed it out.

we only struck out twice as a team? that’s amazing. If we had lost but had been hitting the ball I’m actually ok with it. sometimes you just keep hitting them where the defense is.

Reportedly, part of the reason that Wenceel went down to AAA was to sharpen his eye and command of the strike zone. He did great in AAA, but since he has come back up, I’m not sure if I am seeing more discipline at the plate. During yesterdays game, I think I saw him swinging at balls, more than a few times.

Locking up top prospects to long term deals is how relatively smaller markets keep their best players long term.
We basically just signed him to a 3 year extension at $18.75M AAV compared to what we would’ve had via arbitration…and considering there’s a very good chance that at 28, 29, and 30 years old, McGonigle should be a premier player in the whole league, we got him at an absolute bargain for those years.
Roman Anthony, Konnor Griffin, Bobby Witt Jr, and Julio Rodriguez are examples of guys who have recently been given deals early and it had paid off for the team.

Excellent news!
Biggest question on the Tigers doing this now was chance it could put them into the Salary tax area. But I think the way it’s structured prevents that.

The Tigers announced Wednesday that they’ve agreed to an eight-year, $150MM extension with infielder Kevin McGonigle. The contract begins next season — he’s still on a league-minimum salary in 2026 — and runs through 2034. McGonigle can tack on another $10MM in total via a series of escalators, giving the deal a maximum value of $160MM from 2027-34. Detroit, one of the few teams that publicly discloses contract terms for its players, also provided a year-to-year breakdown of the deal.
McGonigle, 21, takes home a $14MM signing bonus that will be paid up front. He’ll earn $1MM in 2027, $7MM in 2028, $16MM in 2029, $21MM in 2030, $22MM in 2031 and $23MM annually from 2032-34. The contract locks in what would have been McGonigle’s second through sixth years of his original club control and gives the team control over his first three free agent seasons. There are no options on the contract, but escalators could raise his 2032-34 salaries to $25MM, $26MM and $28MM, respectively. McGonigle’s deal does not include conventional no-trade protection, but he’d be owed a $5MM assignment bonus if he’s traded to another club at any point.
McGonigle entered the season as the game’s consensus No. 2 prospect behind Pirates shortstop Konnor Griffin and has now almost immediately surpassed Griffin’s record-setting extension for a young player with such little big league service. Griffin inked a nine-year, $140MM contract last week. Julio Rodríguez‘s $210MM contract is technically the largest ever for a player with under a year of service, but that contract was signed in late July of his rookie season, when he was already an All-Star and the overwhelming Rookie of the Year front-runner. Griffin and McGonigle may be in the same service class, but the context surrounding their extensions differs quite a bit from that of the Rodríguez deal

Right now the Tigers are at 239m in salaries, 10th in the league, salary tax kicks in at 244. Think they got creative to keep under the tax with the McGonigle signing and would need to do the same with Dingler. Can be done, up to them if they want to do it, well and if Dingler wants it, would be another smart move.
Still waiting to see how much they actually offer Skubal as they will offer him something and I doubt it will be lowball. But, won’t happen til after the lockout imo.

It will save them alot of money in the long run if McGonigle is as elite as we all think he is. The only real downside or gamble is if he were to suffer a career type injury.
