Awesome news - McG is great…but idk, I don’t see any of these young guys who got locked up with relatively team friendly deals early finishing out the contracts they’re signing now. If they’re studs, to me, it just screams holdout before the contract ends.
I dont think I have ever heard of a baseball player holding out.

It hasn’t happened all that often in years past. I’m not sure I can think of ten others where a team bought out their arbitration years and player ends up holding out.
That may be coming soon if this becomes more common.
I think this concept of locking these guys up for 8 years right out the gate is still relatively new, though, right? If McG is an MVP caliber player in year 6-7-8 of this, is he really playing for less than $20m a year in 2030 and beyond or however the contract breaks down? I just can’t see that happening. But I guess McG does have some escalators that help with this, now that I’m reading more through the thread.
I just find it hard to believe that you would have, in a hypothetical situation, a 27-year old McG who wins an MVP, hits all his escalators and is making $25m a year in 2032 when you have a guy like Juan Soto, 26, or Kyle Tucker, 27, playing for $51/60m in 2026. At some point, one of these players who got paid early is not going to be happy with the deal they signed if they are elite in 4-5 years. It’s easy to see a situation where these contracts lead to holdouts, imo.
MLB players don’t typically hold out because contracts are fully guaranteed, but this trend of locking these young guys up long-term for team friendly deals is also relatively new. I think it’s a new frontier to be explored when one of these guys on a deal like this is winning MVPs/Cy Youngs.
But we also don’t know what a new CBA will look like re: cap, etc. So who knows. I just find it interesting

I also misread your post 100% as I thought you were saying someone had done this already which I didn’t recall. Which is why I concluded the more it happens I can see it coming.
Yet, it is beneficial to both player and team to do it early with some players.

Oh yeah, it hasn’t happened yet that I’m aware of. I think it’s smart for both player and team to try and do this. Some risk involved, mostly on the team side - especially if it does end up loading to holdouts. Can’t say I blame either the player for trying to get security early or the team for trying to get a team friendly deal…I just know how these things turn out when players don’t feel like they’re making what they should compared to the rest of the market, regardless of the deal that was signed. (or vice-versa with teams).
If someone were to hold out I think it would be someone like Skubal. Even though he won arbitration he is still very underpaid and if he was to blow out his arm this year he would lose hundreds of millions of dollars.
This is actually a pretty good contract for McGonigle when it comes to that kind of stuff. And to answer your questions, thus far, that hasn’t been an issue. Cal Raleigh hit 60 bombs last year and didn’t try and get a raise over the $18M or so he’s earning the next three years. Julio Rodriguez is worth way more than what he’s going to get paid over the next nine or so years and that hasn’t been any sort of problem. I think the Royals and Bobby Witt Jr. might’ve re-done his contract at some point, but now he’s signed there for basically the rest of his career. Ronald Acuña is worth way more than the Braves are paying him and he hasn’t complained. Etc.
That precedent just doesn’t exist in baseball, but like @frm710 said, who knows if it’s coming.

Guys make it be known that they’re not happy with the deal if it was super duper Team friendly and they are a big piece of the franchise and a lot of the cases those things get done. Salvador Perez signed like a total deal of like 15 million dollars for I think like 7 years I’d have to look it up but about 3 years into that deal it was clear it was two Team friendly and I think by year five they renegotiated it. I think this will happen for Ronald Acuña Jr at the end of this year if he stays healthy. He is absolutely nuked his 8-year hundred million deal that he signed I think two years into his career.
I fully expect both McMoney and Griffin to well outplay their contract and have it renegotiated. I don’t think by a lot though I think they’ll just tweak it, given the giant caveat of what the next CBA will look like and even if that CBA will be applicable by the end of these contracts as it may not be , maybe another one past that

Ok I got a question.
Yes that was an unbelievable play by Javy…but, did he not slide off the base path to make that play? Should he not have been out for “running” past/to the side of the plate and then touching it?
I agree he wasn’t touched by Perez, but should he not still have been out?
You have to be quite far out of the baseline for them to call you out.
