Probables:Thursday — RHP Seth Lugo (12-5, 2.66) vs. RHP Keider Montero (1-4, 6.38); Friday — LHP Cole Ragans (7-7, 3.37) vs. LHP Tarik Skubal (12-3, 2.35); Saturday — RHP Michael Lorenzen (5-6, 3.81) vs. TBA; Sunday — RHP Michael Wacha (8-6, 3.58) vs. TBA
Lugo, Royals: He’s coming off his bumpiest start of the season, allowing six runs in 6⅓ innings to the Cubs. But he threw a complete-game, three-hitter against the White Sox the start before that. And, he dominated the Tigers (seven scoreless, three-hit innings with nine strikeouts) on April 26. He is bringing nine pitches to the table, including a sweeper and a slurve (unheard of), but his most effective pitch most nights is his simple 92-mph four-seamer (.176 opponent average).
Montero, Tigers: It’s been a struggle, roughed up in three straight outings (15 earned runs, 15⅓ innings, six homers, .343 opponent average, .687 slugging). His slider was popping out of his hands last time out against the Twins and what is normally an out pitch was either being taken or mashed. His fastball has been hit around, too (.319 average, .638 slug).
One thing I have always enjoyed is the process for the young guys, it’s why I love the minor leagues so much (subscribe to MLB.tv as much for the minor games as the Tiger games).
Then seeing those guys you watch in the minors make that last jump and keep improving is more fun.
This series will probably define whether I continue to watch or not. If we get swept or even go 1-3, there’s too little there for me to stay excited about the team. Sure, all the best to Keith, Perez, Malloy but I can monitor them from the box score.
I still can’t believe we traded Flaherty when we could have maintained excitement for this season with two aces, and still gotten a draft choice in the early 30’s for him.
Loser mentality. I can’t watch a team with loser mentality.
