Tipping Culture

I love the drive thrus where they hold the credit card reader out the window for you to use your card. First screen has tip 10% 20& 30% or no tip.

Sorry I’m not tipping after I drive 10 miles to your drive thru.

Domino’s doesn’t deliver to my house, so i have to go pick it up…first screen…tip. Not happening.

But, don’t you feel guilty?

I always tell them, you want a tip?..… don’t pet a burning dog…,…

I tip between 18-20% because that is the cost of eating out. If we moved to a non tipping model, the cost would only go up so I’m ok with the way it is.

The no tax on tips thing I don’t necessarily agree with. It’s just a ploy to buy votes. Low income earners essentially pay no taxes anyways so the loss of tax income is probably miniscule. Just not sure I agree with different tax rates based on someones career. But hardly an issue I’m losing sleep over.

as history has shown from an economic system standpoint, capitalism really can’t exist properly without a ‘slave’ or poor worker class. I mean it CAN but greed is a bitch which is why it’s generally considered socialism for the rich but capitalism for the poor. Generally the more mixed economic systems frown on tipping, especially as a wage supplement.

I love tipping because I was a server once upon a time in my younger days. I don’t wish the daily hell servers go through upon anyone.

If I’m simply checking out at a register and a tip prompt appears I’ll usually do much less or skip it altogether if there was really no service provided.

But yeah…servers? I try to hook them up…

I got a bill with a suggested tip of 20%, 25%, or 30% a little while ago.

interesting but I’m not following.
What is “it’s”?
the US economy?

I guess yes? But how capitalism morphs over time. In a pure form capitalism might be ok but you get monopolies, government representatives on the corporate dole, etc. So for capitalism to function for everyone it needs to be pretty well regulated.

but most economies on paper are super awesome. it’s when people get involved they all get boogered up.

That’s insane.

I usually tip around 30%. Most of the restaurants I go to aren’t expensive. The server would probably have to personally insult me to get a tip under 20%.

Dick’s Last Resort and Ed Debevic’s are a great time if you play along…

“server would probably have to personally insult me”

I’m a pretty good tipper. Sometimes it’s “don’t play on the highway” Or my personal favorite, “don’t eat the yellow snow”

I’m not going to tell anyone whether they should tip or not.
I do tip, usually 20-25% for good service.

The beauty of all this? it is MY option to tip or not and how much, to help the server.
Not like our gov’t programs that take my money no matter with no choice by me.

Edit: I will say, I hate it when they auto add the tip for a large group, WHY???

Dang, I’m old enough to remember that. At that time, tipping was about 10%, maybe 12%. Some people stopped tipping altogether when they started getting minimum wage. (I actually think it was less than minimum wage at first, no?).

I have lived in many Countries where there was no tipping. It sure is simpler and they pay better wages to employees. The part I don’t like is how fake the servers are for tips.

Shit here in Canada they ask for tips on take away items.
