Tipping Culture

I guess I’m still not following how its capitalism for the poor and socialism for the rich. I mean the poor get more help from social programs, pay less taxes, etc. I could argue its the reverse…capitalism for the rich and socialism for the poor, is that what you meant?

well the programs exist for the poor in a ‘just surviving’ mode. Trust me I was on those as a kid and it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. You can’t ‘get ahead’ on that system. it’s intended as a helping had until you’re on your feet but sadly most people are just stuck in that position.

for the wealthy they can absolutely screw the pooch and use the system to walk away just fine. Look at the various economic crashes and the government just steps in and takes care of it/them. the 29 crash, savings and loan debacle, housing market, etc etc. Whole bunch of poor people had their lives destroyed, small portion of rich people did just fine.

and then once a crash happens and things devalue the wealthy can move back in and make grand purchases.

The data on all of this is pretty damning. Protections have been put in place at various times, and then stripped away later on.

Come to IOWA brother, farmers are a whole class that complain about socialism while waiting for their gov’t checks. They aren’t poor.

All I know is that I’m really looking forward to going to Australia again later this year. Some places actually don’t ALLOW you to tip, even if you’re the dumb American and still try to. One place actually chased us down and said, sorry, very kind of you, mate, but we don’t accept tips. And handed my cash tip back to me!!

Lets stay on tipping folks.

hence my down under post…lol.

I was going to gripe about the more expensive place the larger the tip.
But the fancier the joint equals more service time,
Then I realized the tip is as much for server time as it is for the service.
Although when I eat alone, I’m pretty quick, in and out, so fancy places say Ruth Chris kind get me on the tip a little bit.

I actually got this from a customer when I was a teenager working as a bus boy at Silky Sullivan off of Michigan ave in Dearborn. Worked at Crabby Joes, as well, which was right down the street.

Typically 20% as well. Sometimes more

Several people have said this, and it’s not what the servers want AT ALL.

In Michigan, they tried to ram through a law to increase server wages, and both the restaurant industry and the majority of servers were against it (the law was scuttled hours before it was scheduled to go into effect).

The vast majority of waiters and waitresses make WAY more money at $5/hour + tips than they would making $15 or $20/hr straight time.

While I agree with the sentiment of it being a wonky system, it’s not wonky in a way that is against the interests of waitstaff.

I’ve seen places that calculate their baked in tip on only the food and drinks. Few and far between, but it does happen around here. I’m with you, you shouldn’t tip on tax. Same with credit card fees.

My daughter, server and bartender, agree’s 100% with this.

She was making 65-80,000 a year as 21yr old server and had taken MGR and GM roles in the restaurant world. Wasn’t worth it in her opinion.

She left the industry 2 yrs ago as she pointed out it was never a lifetime career, it was hell on her marriage (hours didn’t match with her husbands), just something til I figured out what I wanted to.

On the topic of tipping, I hate the percentage deal.

The server who brings out my $6 eggs is not doing 10X less work than the server who takes my order for a $60 steak.

I also refuse to participate in guilt tipping. In fact, I will withhold my patronage from establishments that are pushing tips in this way.

Here’s another one that bothers me… “Would you like to round up to help kids education”? While it’s just cents, I ALWAYS refuse that scam. I don’t know the charity, I don’t know who’s getting the money… But I DO know that your business has already pledged the money and me rounding up is just reimbursement for the pledge… And if you end up with more than you pledged, you get to keep it. Free tax write off.

Goodwill does that shit all the time. I told them not with your ebay prices.

I look upon tipping as a means of passing it on. They need the money more than I do. I don’t have kids so giving to those who are likely more in need.

The tipping culture doesn’t have me nearly as worried as culture tipping.
