We are paying Borom 5 million this year

Why can’t we just get rid of him and keep Scruggs next year

The money works . It’s just do we value having resigning Scruggs or Borom will be the decision

We will, for sure get rid of Borom. But that’s independent of Scruggs. He’ll want to get paid and want guarantees he’ll start. We won’t give them to him… well, if I had to guess we won’t, but I could be wrong about that. At this rate he’ll end up being the highest paid iOL in FA, we’re not ponying up for that.

Which is why i absolutely can’t get behind the idea of not playing him

He’s earned it

:100: Agreed.
The sad part, we will get nothing in return.
Two ways to change this scenario, tag him or trade him.
Option 3, sign/extend him now and trade Mays.
Mays only has 2 years left on his contract, I’d rather have Juice with a 4 year deal.
I like Juice and Cade equally as well. I don’t want to lose either one, but we are going to lose one after the season and get nothing in return.

We’ll get a juicy comp pick. That’s how the Eagles and Niners always have a plethora of mid-round picks.

He’ll play for sure. He may even start. It’s a good problem to have. I am just not willing to say he’s a better option than Mays yet, because while we’ve seen Scruggs, we haven’t seen Mays. He may be even better (something the whole world would have believed 6 months ago).

This really comes down to your stance of “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it,” to mine: “if you can get even better, you should try.” Just philosophical differences, I guess.

Very doubtful on a comp pick for the 2028 draft. Brad always finds a way to get them canceled out by signing a few UDFA’s of his own.

Fair. And true.

Which is Wild because I’m the notorious degenerate gamble here lol

But it’s not even if it ain’t broke don’t fix it…

It’s we are literally #1 right now

I really want this thread to die. It’s getting obnoxious.

Well we’ve hardly had any big FAs sign with other teams during his tenure. Davis I guess but we were trying to re-sign him at roughly that same cost, so trading him out for Reed was necessary in the end. This time that won’t be the case.

But it has a way of sucking us back in.
It is truly fascinating to see the career paths of both Juice and Cade. Cade has 1 year of experience over Juice, but if you compare Juice to Cade, his 1st NFL season pretty much mirrors Cades 1st season, same thing for season 2 and it continues from there. I feel like Juice is right where Cade was at the end of his rookie contract.
We now luckily have 2 of the best centers in the NFL on our roster. What to do to maximize our rewards is the question I have. If we do nothing and allow Juice to walk away for nothing, we will have squandered this once in a Lions lifetime opportunity.
What are you going to do Brad? Sit tight and play it safe for 2026, or take advantage and add to our future.

I agree Lions won’t do much in free agency.

I think it can be assumed that the Lions won’t be signing ANY outside UFA offensive players that factor into the comp pick formula.

As for defense… I would also be surprised.

Even if Wonnum leaves… and possibly Jack and Kerby no longer in the long term plans, the Lions are still positioned to follow their plan of minimal free agent spending and building through the draft.

I would say that the possible vacancies left by 2-3 solid veteran defenders makes me hope that the trading deadline is utilized to add a player that might be a solid vet starter for possibly more than just a rental.

Brad got really good at finding centers

I think we got 3 good ones not 2

There is no decision to be made. Cade is currently injured. Hopefully a minor injury, but there’s little chance Juice isn’t playing this week regardless.

The deadline is in 5 days. They’re not going to rush a decision on Mays’s health to maybe trade one guy for a low round pick.

There’s huge risk and little reward for trading either guy now, and the numbers don’t make sense to get rid of Mays in the offseason in favor of paying Juice a top-of-market deal (let alone trying to roster both).

Outside of crazy, edge-case scenarios, what is going to happen is already set.

That’s what I think too. The Jack long-term outlook is my only hesitation, but I also bet they want to see what we have with Rolder. Him + Rodrigo as vet depth is a sound plan going into the season. I guess maybe there could be a CB we might splurge on at the same level as whatever FA contract Scruggs gets, but I’m also hoping we start dipping into the “not in the comp formula” guys like cuts and post May 1st signings.

They really want a Center that can be trusted with one on ones in pass pro. In particular they want a center that can anchor and not need a Guard to chip. Mayes is their type at Center.

Yes the numbers do make sense. The bulk of Cades deal is guaranteed money for 2027. If traded, his 2027 guarantee goes to the next team.

If you don’t count the $5+MM cap hit from the bonus acceleration. On top of whatever extra the team would have to pay Juice in excess of Cade’s contract.
