Valenti: Losers blame the refs

23 PI reviews… 1 overturned…

Guess who that was?

This team is plenty good enough. They need to play better. Aside from running the ball better I think some of these issues should be quite fixable.

The run game concerns the heck out of me though

“Blaming officials constantly” is a thing. I’m not defending that.

Valenti is trolling. It’s his profession. Do I dislike him because of my age? It’s possible. I’ve seen his act before and i’m simply not entertained by it. He is paid to share a take and generate activity for the station. Iggy, you don’t even know what his personal take really is. All you know is what he’s paid to spew. He could be choking back his own bile for taking that stance on-air. He may be as livid as other fans. You really don’t know because his personal feelings on the subject are not what he’s paid to share. He’s paid to share whatever is going to generate calls and attract listeners.

“This is a day where everyone is going to be right.” Not even two minutes later… “I’m not having that conversation because you’re wrong.” Pretty much sums up his show.

Here’s reality, near as I can tell.

  1. Most NFL games are very close and very frequently go down the wire
  2. One play here or there can make all the difference
  3. When the refs weigh in one side significantly more than the other it can make all the difference
  4. Players play their hearts out and deserve a fair shake
  5. Fans who spend their time and money following a team deserve a fair shake
  6. Patricia said all the right things, focusing (at least publicly) only on what they can control
  7. Yes the Lions could have played better, but so could have the Packers, who were gifted a W
  8. All Lions fans ask for after years of getting the shaft, is a fair shake
  9. To just sit there and take it is cuckold behavior
  10. The Lions will destroy the Cowboys at Ford Field

I just watched the video ready to hate the guy based on the “Losers blame the refs” comment with no context and I hate to say it but I agree with all of it. He’s pretty spot on here no matter what you think of him.

He’s right about the perception of the franchise being garbage, not capable of eating at the adult table, being a nuisance etc. They need to rise above it all to change the perception and they didn’t. This game was an opportunity to do that and they let the Packers off the hook which led to the game being close enough for the refs to make a difference.

Yes! Also, we made plays to position ourselves to score…also reversed.

That is what non-professional people don’t understand. There is a big difference between what you say in front of cameras and what you say and do behind closed doors. If Patricia throws a rant at the podium it accomplishes nothing except getting himself fined and becoming a media soundbite (“They are what we thought they were!!!”).

His team cares way, way more about what he says to them than what he says to the media.

But saying the right thing in the media doesn’t prevent the Lions from having discussions with the League office.

Which is why the OP likes him so much. Trolling Lions fans is what both have a passion for and why he constantly starts threads like this.

Don’t feed the trolls

Yeah, you definitely don’t hear Green Bay complaining!

I tend to agree with “blaming the refs” as being a bit of a “loser mentality”. I guess I think that’s a bit harsh, perhaps, but I do disagree with blaming the refs.

Having said that, it’s hard to blame ANYONE for pointing a finger at the refs for this game. I strongly believe the Lions lost that game and not the refs and even started a post on it the other day.

Funny thing is, I wrote up that post with about 5 minutes left in the game. I’d seen the game before. I knew how it ended. I knew that the Lions failed to win the game with several minutes left in the 4th, even before the 2nd Flowers penalty. The Lions lost that game, not the refs. The refs only helped the Lions do what the Lions do best - figure out how to not put a team away the simple way.

I’ve also been critical of Stafford, despite him having some incredible arm talent. Here’s why:

Read that story and check out the end:

I asked Stafford if there was a lot of grousing on the plane ride home from Green Bay.

“It was pretty quiet. … To be honest, I was laying down in the back trying to get some sleep.”

How the f*** can our $30 million/year QB “catch some sleep” on that plane ride home while those of us who spend money to simply watch the Lions weren’t able to sleep for days?

A competitor doesn’t catch any sleep on that flight home. A competitor doesn’t go up to the podium with absolutely 0 fire after a game like that. He doesn’t truly give a sh** about winning and losing. He’s got plenty of money in his pocket and a beautiful home. His kids will all go to private school and everything is peachy.

We need a QB who’s priority is winning football games if we ever want to be champions in Detroit - just my opinion.

PR, or Lawyer?

Yet here you are making your 4th response in this thread…

Wow. That is incredible. I’ve always felt that losing never really bothered Stafford…

When Booger McPharland is much more heated than the freaking franchise QB… thats a major problem.

Yeah, I don’t want to see Stafford throwing temper tantrums on a weekly basis or anything here. But, after 10+ years of this bullshit happening you’d think that just once Stafford could show a little leadership and passion to support his team and the fans.

I don’t hate Stafford by any means. I’m just perplexed by his nonchalance during these kinds of moments. Where’s your fire, Stafford? Does it even exist? Did it ever exist or did it disappear after you hit $100,000,000 in the bank?

In all fairness, I wouldn’t really, truly give a shit either if I had that sort of savings account. I’d be counting down to the offseason - not caring about how Detroit just got jobbed and failed - again - on my watch.

The article is very good. Thanks for sharing.

I hope everyone reads it so they realize that you basically picked one line of it and framed it the way you wanted. You ignored the whole gist of the article Mitch wrote and ignored Stafford saying it was a very long, quiet flight home but that he can’t afford to dwell on it because he has to get ready to play Minnesota. Which is fact. He never said he doesn’t care or that it doesn’t hurt. The whole article was about how we got jobbed…again…and that the whole sports world knows it.

It was very CNN of you.

I am not even remotely surprised that you think someone who is in control of his emotions has no fire. This is not an either/or situation. No projection of emotion (tantrum, yelling, etc) does not mean you have no fire. When you are triggered, you can’t think as well - literally.

What lens of the world would you have to look through to feel Mathew has no competitive fire? Very interesting feedback.

Feminine energy always is flowing and cycling energy, like nature. Sometimes there’s a storm, sometimes there is a calm, sunny day.
Masculine energy is stoic, centered, controlled, calm. The Masculine brings a trustworthy emotional strength. Masculine energy is more predictable, less chaotic. Controlling your emotions is a good thing, especially for a leader.

Dude runs up the middle, breaks 2 tackle, lowers his shoulder on a LB, and he has no competitive fire. Throws a TD pass with a dislocated shoulder, instead of letting Culpepper lose the game for us. He has thrown blocks, at times. And then there are the times we’ve seen him mic’d up. Mathew is a fantastic leader and competitor.

You sir, are venting. What you focus on, you find. The entire country was pissed after that game. Him choosing to let his emotions run him on the plane ride home isn’t going to fix bad officiating.

And the real “Loser Mentality” is to walk around seeing everything negative and ranting about things 100% of the time. Winners experience setbacks, analyze what went wrong and then move forward.

Strategically, I do think the Lions, as an organization, need to address the league about the calls.

Its a legit problem. A “winning” organization fights on ALL LEVELS to give their team a competitive chance. They don’t just lie down and accept being the Washington Generals. You can say the Lions need to “overcome” the calls. But why should it be that way all the time? The Packers don’t have to overcome calls. They can get outplayed and still win games because of refs.

That is not for the players to dwell on though. They need to fix what they can fix when they are on field so games don’t come down to reffing.
