Every team is going for it on fourth down. Some teams get them some teams don’t. It’s all about execution!! That’s what I see. To tell Dan not to go for it who by the way is basically the inventor of 4th downs is crazy. Let’s just trust in our coach the rest of the way and see what happens.
It is about the situation. On the road in the wind, throwing it? Take the points. Leaky Oline, with a dominant D line. Take the points. To follow a single rule because it worked when the Oline was solid doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. I like the attitude, but I think Dan needs a more nuanced approach. I also think Dan has changed the game, so good for him and the lions.
Only a fool blindly goes for it on every 4th down.
We of course have no clue what all goes into Dan’s approach.
I agree, but who is going for every 4th down?

Saw Gym Shorts go on 4th and 1 and his left OLmen face plant on top of each other. Lol.
I just watched Carolina go 3 for 3 on 4th in bad weather. Also watched Colts go 0 for 2 and the Texans go 0 for 2 on 4th downs. It’s all about execution. Lots of people didn’t like us going for it last year but we did it and won 15 games
I’ve been trying, man. I’ll pass the baton over to you.
Nobody complained when we iced the game against GB last year
Well, from the outside, it looks like he likes to go for it regardless. I would not in the wind on the road with a leaky oline. I would take the points. I don’t need to know his precise calculation to criticize his decision : ) I see stubborness that worked when the team needed it regresses to the mean when used as a blanket strategy.
I just wouldn’t do it with a leaky oline. I would do it all day with a good oline (or at least a better one, like the one we had last year).
I get your point but a lot of the 4th downs we don’t get are drops by our WRs
Clearly.
This is all fair.
I think my main objection is that some portray it as Dan simply being like “■■■■ it.” I really think there is a thought process rather than it just being an emotional lurch.
I get that too, but that is not necessarily a reason to throw it. Jared has to throw a perfect pass and, these days, hope his guys don’t drop it. Perfection is needed (and in the wind on the road…is a lot to ask). I like that Dan rolls the dice but the best gamblers know when to fold their hand.
I think there is, but I also think he’s attached to the idea the way a lot of people in various professions get attached to certain ideas. The attachment often works on the climb up but then nuance is needed. Put differently, I think he is still taking the advice that he had to do things differently to win in the league. The advice (from Sean Payton?) is something he seems to still believe. More nuance is needed. As with most things, to get good, you need a strategy, but to be great, minute adjustments are required. I hope he is capable of this as in my view, he’s lost us a couple of games (or at least preventing the players from winning it or losing it bc of their play).
He’s also won us some games with the same strategy.
This year? Maybe. The last years, definately. For me, with a solid Oline I would back the call pretty much without exception (except I would still think twice on the road in bad weather). I just don’t like the call with our oline. Or his stubborn desire to run Gibbs (not monty) up the middle over and over. He gets stuck on ideas in ways that the top play callers do not. It does worry me.
Put differently, the strategy looks genius when it works more than 50% of the time. If, over all, it stops working (and it seems to have stopped working) in part bc of our oline and in part bc teams watch film and adjust, then it is no longer the best strategy. I don’t think we keep going with it just because it worked last year. Dan (I suspect) will likely keep going with it as it is part of his view of the game.
I didn’t know Stefanski turned over play calling to his D-coordinator??? ![]()
How many times has Gibbs or Monty been stopped over the last 3 years.
